Hello,

I am trying to restore my Mac IIci and have run into a problem with the replacement hard drive.

I found an exact match for the Quantum Prodrive 105Mb drive the machine started with, when I tried to format the drive with my Allied Peripherals Boot floppy that came with my original drive, the utility does not recognize the new drive. Also, the drive ID information the utility displays is scrambled with garbage characters.

The new drive was pulled from a non Apple system, although should I be able to use any SCSI drive of that vintage?

I have MacDrive so I can read/write Mac floppies and hard drives from a windows machine, are there boot floppies with tools to format the drive?

I would first suspect a problem with the SCSI cabling, termination, or
controller. Has your Mac been recapped?

ProDrive? Most of those have rubber head stops that have turned to goo causing the heads to stick. Even if it was “new”, it’s nearly 30 years old at this point and the rubber is breaking down. Look it up and you’ll find a few “fixes” but none for the light hearted.

Haha,i agree, the fix is definitely not for the light-hearted, haha...
your best bet is to get one of those scsi to SD, adapters there's a
gentleman that was selling on eBay but he now has his own website I forget
the name of the website but between 60 and 70 bucks you can't go wrong, the
guy is based in California and is a good guy that sells those.

thank for the link… looks like they have a super speed one now lol… 100 bucks…. hmm.. little steep…
Full speed… and vintage computer LOL… ok..

anyways the one here for 59 should do fine… the original versions like REV1 or rev2 had massive speed issues but after V3 its just as fast as anything else in your vintage computer…

The original drive was recognized by the utility, so I don't think it is cabling or the controller. The board has not been recapped although it boots without error chimes.

I found that the drive was pulled from a server and is not Apple branded. Can this be formatted/patched for use on my Mac IIci?

Apple HD Setup is an application that's usually on a Disk Tools disk alongside Disk First Aid.

By design the Disk Tools disks are bootable, so they can be used to repair/recover the primary hard disk. (Prior to System 7, they were the Utilities disks.)

I found an archive site that has a StuffIt compressed image file. I can read/write Mac floppies with MacDrive on my Windows machine. I will look into writing img files from Windows.

Sorry for the long delay...

I put the uncooperative Quantum Pro drive in a external case and connected to the now working IIci. So far the HD setup tool cannot see the drive at all.

The drive is spinning up and I don't see any termination issues. Though I want to check my SCSI Id setting which might have come loose.
