Caution: there might be spoilers to Code Geass, Sailor Moon and RWBY in
this, thus you should avert thine eyes now, or at least press the "next
message" button on your usenet reader. I will even put in 1 screen (at
least on my usenet reader) of spoiler space.

I watched "Code Geass" when it originally aired on Toonami (or Adult
Swim, I can't remember), and have rewatched the series a few times
since, and specifically the last episode the other day.

Everyone (or at least lots of people, perhaps not "everyone") says what
a great ending the show has, but I am absolutely baffled as to why.

Lelouche becomes emperor after he compels Nunally to give him the
damocles key. Then, 2 months, I think that is what the anime said, at
his "big parade of death," the "new Zero" (Suzaki, I think) kills him.
Then everyting magically gets better with people, if I remember the
anime correctly "working to end poverty and hunger," I don't know if
that was the phrase in the original Japanese, but at least that is what
it was translated as.

Why?

Did everyone just become "better" because the villain was killed and
start doing stuff like volunteering more time at the food bank?

Did everyone just become "better" because they felt sorry for a cute
girl in a wheelchair (from the montage at the end, I assume the Nunally
took over as empress).

Did Nunally make the Britannian empire more "socialistic," spending
more resources on working to end poverty and hunger rather than military
conquest.

Did she start signing the paperwork to give sovereignty back to the
"areas?" I think, at least in the short run, that would make things worse.

Everyone (well again, not "everyone," but lotsa people) say how great
the ending was, but to me the ending just adds to the confusion.

Don't get me wrong, Code Geass is really good, perhaps arguably one of
the best anime ever made, it is just that I don't think the ending is as
"good" as many other people seem to think.

Another show that I rewatched is the new Viz dub of Sailor Moon, or at
least up to episode 89, which is the highest that I can find on Viz's
site or anywhere else.

I think up to episode 110 or so has been dubbed, just has not been
released to their site, at least not the free part of their site, they
might be available on the "paid" version of their site, with the last 90
or so not even yet having been dubbed.

I don't know if they plan on releasing any more for free, or if anyone
who wants past episode 89 (when they get dubbed) has to either buy the
DVD's, subscribe to the Viz site, go to slightly more nefarious
streaming sites, or mess with bittorrent and pirate the episodes.

After I completed the 89 episodes, I had to decide if I just wanted to
put my viewing on hold until (and if) more of the dubs become available,
or continue watching the Viz-subbed episodes, which are available all
the way through episode 200. I decided to watch the subs, and think I
am currently up to episode 198 or 199.

I don't know if the Viz-sub is "better" or really any different from the
oldfansubs.

I think there are several things I like about the new dub:

It is "digitally enhanced" to make the colors slightly more vibrant, and
I think it just looks a bit better than the original.

Viz didn't change it from 4:3 proportions to 16:9 proportions.
Everything that I have seen that is changed in that way has either the
top or the bottom cut off or is stretched in some weird way. Perhaps
with animation, they could animate the edges rather than just
windowboxing it, but most of the time all they would be animating is a
wall or whatever.

The translation is more accurate to the original Japanese.

On the one hand, I don't really care about that since I don't really
judge a dub on how "accurate" the translation is, but on the other hand
I do appreciate that shows like that do not have to be censored anymore,
or at least as much. I don't think it is possible to avoid some at
least slight change when translating (this seems to greatly bother some
people, but not me).

The names are not "Americanized," changing Usagi to Serena, Umino to
Melvin, etc. LBGT relationships, like the generals of the "negaverse,"
(I would have to do some Googling to find the names) and Uranus and
Neptune, are not covered up. For my feelings on that, see the above
Paragraph.

Some of the episodes where the girls are in swimsuits are left out for
that reason, or at least some people make that contention. I don't
think that is the reason, or at least not the entire reason, and I think
so for the following reasons:

1. After Cloverway took over the dubbing, they eased up on this type of
censorship, but I am almost positive that in at least one of the
DIC-dubbed episodes, at least some of the girls are in swimsuits.

2. The stories that are cut that have the girls in swimsuits are sort
of "side stories" and I think that has more to do with why they were cut
than the girls being is swimsuits.

3. Their "magical girl costumes" are not much more than swimsuits to
begin with.

4. Many of the "sexy villainesses" wear outfits that are as revealing
or perhaps more revealing than swimsuits.

There is also an Anime America review on Youtube that implies that the
last season was not dubbed because of the boy band that turns into to
the semi-close-to-sexy girls in the skimpy outfits.

While I don't really like those characters, and kind of wonder exactly
how they would be handled, my understanding is that the last season not
being dubbed had more to do with licensing issues and declining ratings.

Things I do not like about the new dub, or at least that I like better
about the old dub:

The theme song. Sorry, but I rather like the translated version of the
theme song.

The theme song of the last season, it might be old news to everyone else
that the last season has a different opening, but that fact is new to
me. I like when the opening shows Sailor Jupiter (I think) in the pink
kimono, but I like the original opening better, perhaps because it has a
"25-year head start.

Molly's voice. While giving her a heavy New York accent might not of
been the "best" choice, I personally give them kudos for at least giving
her something different than the "generic anime dub girl voice."

Luna's voice. In the original dub, she sounded like a mentor/caretaker,
but in the new dub, she just sounds like one of Usagi's junior high
buddies.

I have also been rewatching the show RWBY in prepatation for the new
season, which according to the Rooster Teeth YouTube channel, is coming
this fall.

Apparently, there is some controversy as to whether this show is "anime"
or just "anime style," just google "is RWBY an anime."

I personally don't think it really matters if it is "anime" or "anime
style," I quite enjoy it, and so do a lot of other people, apparently.

My favorite season was the 4th season because it went from being a "high
school anime" to following the journey of each of the girls after Beacon
(I think that is the name of the School) is destroyed.

I don't know what the new season holds in store, but I hope the girls
don't enroll at another school and it becomes a "high school anime" again.

I think it is quite interesting that there is a Japanese dub of the show
now as well.

I do not know the details, whether it is some sort of fandub, or if it
has been licensed by a Japanese company and is perhaps even being shown
on Japanese TV, or what, but I do think it is interesting that that show
is popular enough in Japan to have a Japanese dub.

I wonder if there is a Japanese fansub that preceded the dub that
became popular enough for a Japanese company to see value in dubbing it.
I think this is how Funimation and Viz choose at least some of their
titles (the sub gets popular).

I also wonder in Monty Oum et. al. started Rooster Teeth with just the
intention of distributing anime through internet sources such as
Crunchyroll and YouTube, or if they hoped to someday sell a show to
somebody like Cartoon Network, or Nicktoons, or another of the big networks.

The plan was to make a world where Nunally could be happy. Lelouche
killed off or brainwashed all the empire's power structure, set himself
up as the big evil of the world, and then killed himself to let Nunally
take over his carefully orchestrated new world order.

I think people like it because it is so true to Lelouche's character to
come up with such a needlessly complicated and highly unlikely to work
plan.

Perhaps, but even if Lelouche brainwashed all the people in the empire's
power structure to be less milataristic (or totally non-miltaristic) and
more altruistic, Nunally or someone still has to actually do something,
such as redirect Brittannia's resources to solve the problems described.

What was actually done?

We were never shown so all we have to go on are guesses. But almost
anything a sweet, well meaning girl like Nunally would do would be a
vast improvement over what had gone before and I imagine Lelouche left
"suggestions" on how thing needed to be done until Nunally grew into the
position.
