Hi! I just got a XM1541 parallel cable in the mail at my mother's house and am having problems using it. Under HDD64, a directory load locked up the system--until I turned off the real 1541 drive. SC either said I couldn't use CBM drives or said it couldn't access the drive. I'm going home later this afternoon, so I won't be able to do anything for a while, but any ideas would be appreciated. BTW, it's a parallel cable, but I'm not quite sure which one.

The XM1541 cable is just a serial cable, but it attaches into parallel
port of the machine. There is four schottky diodes inside, and xm cable
is meant to support multitask. It works fine with SC, but not with
64HDD. It will work fine under cbm4linux or opencbm.

Also 64hdd does not support XM cable. It must be XE cable, that is same
as XM but two wires exchanged.

64HDD uses number 8 normally. If there is a cbm device with number 8 on
line, they will mix each other and wont of course work. So change the
64hdd to device 9 and so on if you want to use standard 1541 on line.

If you want to use SC with the 1541, DISCONNECT the c64 from line. If
connected it will not work.

What the system got locked up do you mean the red light was flashing on the
drive?

If so did you run any code to determine the cause of the error?

I'm not totally sure what cable I have, but I got it from the maker of 64hdd.

Is turning off the C64C good enough?

I read the directory of the 64HDD connection from BASIC, and the computer displayed the printed the usual SEARCHING message then stopped responding. The 1541 was still connected. I turned it off and got a FILE NOT FOUND errror. :(

Then it should be OK. What kind of computer are you using with the cable
(laptop, desktop)? Are you using usb -> parallel converter? Is the cable
connected to motherboard LPT or a daughterboard LPT? In what mode the
LPT port is?

OK. Check also that there is _no_ 64 hdd device on device 8.

It should be, but you are on safe side if you disconnect it.

There is none.

I did that. Or I think I did that.
