Hi readers and typers.
I watched this finally in the last week rented
thru Netflix. I watched it first in the English dub then
yesterday in the Japanese with subtitles(which is my preferred
mode).
It is extremely beautiful in all the technical aspects
and a few years ago I am sure I would have found it delightful.
The original manga which accounts for the memories the heroine
experiences would have been more interesting.
But we see the 10 year old girl frustrated by her
father's rejection of the possibility of a career for her
in the performing arts. She turns into an adult office lady.
At the age of 27 she is taking a holiday as
a farm worker. So she is looking back at 27 to 10 years old
in 1966 from 1983 (unless I have miscalculated). She overcomes
her distrust of men enough to fall in love by the end of the
show.
This is blatant sentimental propaganda for return
to the soil and that all Japanese women must make babies.
I watched several of the Bonus specials and enjoyed
the Making of Only Yesterday which has a clear explanation
of the techniques employed by the creators in the the late
20th Century.
Well everyone should see this and most of the members
of the r.a.a.m. Newsgroup probably have done so already but if
they have not they should if for no other reason than the
beauty of the production.
