An excerpt from Your Vigor For Life Frightens Me a
book of R.Crumb's letters from 1958-1977 is available
at Fantagraphics.

I found the excerpt entertaining and informative.

Now of course this is not Japanese manga or anime
but it gives a view of what we might call American doujin
and their interests in the 1950s. Crumb and his correspondents
are publishing short-lived fanzines. The modern Web has
revived all the stuff that formerly was too niche for the
big publishers but this shows Crumb's earliest work and
his wide interest in comics.
