Got the following email from the U.S. Post Office. Note the digital
preview of the envelope.
However, to create an account, they put you through the ringer to
have a secure password; lots of requirements.
****
We are excited to announce that the My USPS application will soon be
upgraded to offer you more benefits and convenience.
No action is required from you - you will retain your My USPS benefits,
but will also have access to Informed Delivery® notifications, a new,
free feature that gives you the ability to see a digital preview of your
incoming mail. Informed Delivery allows you to view grayscale images of
the exterior, address side of your household’s letter-sized mailpieces*
on a computer, tablet, or mobile device. This new feature offers the
convenience of seeing what is coming to your mailbox - anytime,
anywhere.
Now when you log in to your My USPS account, you will be able to track
packages and view a preview of your letter-sized mailpieces in one,
integrated dashboard. Your dashboard will display mailpiece images for
a seven-day period; you can also opt to receive these images via
email notification.
To learn more about Informed Delivery notifications, please visit
the Informed Delivery FAQs. We are proud to offer you more insight
into your mail delivery, and thank you for being a valued USPS
customer.
Sincerely,
Your United States Postal Service®

A few years ago I saw a demo of the mail processing in the South Station, Boston
PO. Each envelope was scanned and a yellow barcode printed on the back. Then
hours later when people in some processing plant (I don't remember where it was)
who read the envelope have entered the correct zip code for the destination in a
database the envelopes are re-scanned using the barcode on the back to identify
the envelope and the barcode of the destination zipcode is printed on the front
and then they go into the sorting machines.

It's a bit late. They've been doing this, that I've known, for at least 10 years, and
possibly quite a bit longer. It's only now that they're publicly acknowledging it.
They had half of what the need to provide this service in place for years, but now
they're adding a user interface to it. Kind of creepy if you ask me.

I've been compiling a list of memes which IMHO are destroying society.
One of them is: "If something can be done, it should be done."
However, a milder form is undisputibly true (at least for us believers
in Murphy's Law): "If something can be done, it will be done."
A bit less urgent, but just as inevitable.

Apple install one on every iPhone - Siri - which wakes up
unexpectedly from time to time to complain it didn't understand you.

Neither has the purpose of "recording your conversations".
If you don't want siri to listen to you, then turn it off.
They are both devices that operate by voice command. How do you expect
them to understand voice commands if they do not store enough of the sounds
that they recieve to be able to decipher the command?

People seem willing to trade just about anything for convenience. I've see
this thing in action and it's truly magical: "Alexa, order more dishwasher
detergent", and in the next day or so it magically appears at your door.
Next best thing to a replicator, if only you didn't have to pay for the
stuff.

I read recently of a family who let relatives use their house while they
were on holiday. They thought the button was air freshener.
Occupants came back to a large consignment of toilet paper. No cat needed!

What amazes me is that people think ankle bracelets are creepy,
while eagerly buying smartphones that do the same thing.
The hardware necessary for "Nineteen Eighty-four" has been deployed.
What Orwell (or anyone else, for that matter) didn't realize is that
Big Brother turned out to be not government, but corporations.

I wonder how people who live in Surrey, BC, Canada feel about
Siri. (I grew up there.)

I grew up a bit farther east, officially in Surrey but close enough
to Langley (over the hill and all) that many assumed we lived there.
As for Siri, I wonder how many residents of Rootin' Tootin' Newton
call on her services to summon the cops.
"Delta is never having to say you're Surrey."
(My sister lives just over _that_ line.)

In late grade 11 and in grade 12, I lived on 192nd Street just
south of the Fraser Highway so I did that, too.

Q: Why do birds fly upsidedown over Surrey?
A: Because there is nothing worth shitting on.

It was a while ago. I'll see if I can find it. But you're right - it
should go in RISKS, although I guess it's just a documentation error. (I
wrote a manual for our house)

surprised. ;-)
