I had a file today, suffixed .xlsx, tried various spreads to read it,
gnumeric did. The others (Libre*) had problems.

When I first went looking for a spreadsheet to use under Linux, gnumeric was
a TOY, and I used nexs for some years. Their support was not great,
integration with the ordinary shell was not great, but the functions
available, editing and graphing was top notch. Well, gnumeric definitely
caught up! There are a few tiny things that might work better in nexs, like
some obscure graphing features, but gnumeric really works well, and it is
well-supported.

I have never found any of the open office/Libre programs to be any good.

Open Office will work for that.
