According to what I read about that, the AtariBox will be based on a PC
hardware.

Then, if you visit this site:
https://www.atari.com/arcade/developers/

You can see that Atari organized the development of old Atari games
revisited using the talent of fans without paying for their develoment time.
Only the result is rewarded if you submit your program. (submissions are
closed now).

In my opinion, Atari has succeded in rewritting all of its old stuff
without any internal develoment : the fans did it.
Now they are going to integrate this set of games into a PC with a
"console" packaging.

A motherboard with the minimum: CPU + integrated graphics, 4MB, no hard
disk, a memory card and two joysticks connectors.

Let's see whether I'm right or wrong...

Guillaume.

According to what I read, the new ATARIbox console will be a next-gen
console, at the level of PlayStation 4, Xbox One or Switch, and would
compete with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo's consoles. The ambitions of
ATARI seem to be at the level of everybody's expectations about it =)

It's amazing how they can write articles from a short sentence from
Frederic Chesnais.
The teaser (a short video) shows a console that looks like the old Atari
2600.
This can be a clue to imagine that Atari won't create anything new :
just a kind of emulator for their old games. A PC machine that can run
Java to play Pong, Lunar lander...

Everything that you can do now with your computer or tablet, nothing new.

Guillaume.

You are not reading the reliable sources of information. There's a lot
written about ATARI's video, but a very few writers understood it ...
You must concentrate on what F. Chesnais effectively said about that !

*Atari reveals first pictures of its new games console*
The Telegraph by Matthew Field 07/17/2017

Atari has revealed images of its new Ataribox, the company's first
video games console in more than 20 years.

The Ataribox will come in black with ribbed lines and wood paneling,
a throwback to the original console released in 1977.

The Ataribox will feature four USB slots, an HDMI connector and an
SD card reader. Atari said the front panel could either come in wood
or glass and that the company planned to launch two versions of the
console: a wood edition and a black/red edition.

You never had a console. So you don't know anything about consoles.
You're a special case, because almost everybody knows about consoles.
You don't.

And the question is : what can you do with this console that you can't
do with a standard PC/Linux and emulators?

You're speaking about PC (or Mac ...) but ATARIbox is not a PC, but
a console. So what you can't do with another console (Xbox, PlayStation,
Switch ...) is developing contents, like you usually can do with a PC.
That means ATARIbox is good for playing, have multimedia but furthermore
ATARI owners will be able to develop, as it was possible on ATARI ST.

Think about it =)

Good for playing, multimedia and development?

Do you mean that this is not possible with a PC?

It's a console. You don't know what is a console, so give it a try :-)
You're speaking about a PC from which you'll have to pay to MS or Apple,
to be able to develop. This is not the case with the ATARIbox.

But you're a special case. You don't know anything about Linux, do you ?
You don't know anything to consoles and GNU/Linux. You're an ignorant :-(

So you have informations about a Development Kit that is available to
the user? With the specific librairies that will allow you to take
advantage of the AtariBOX hardware?
Where is the link of this information?

I did (think about it) and personally I think its a cynical attempt to
make money out of an historic brand without adding too much content.

There has been very little information on what is coming. There is
absolutely no solid information on the AtariBox web site. There are a
couple of pictures but no info at all.

More info was promised within two months in July. Nothing has appeared.
This seems very like the Atari of old..

... I would love to be proven wrong, and for a wonderful product to
appear, but I won't be holding my breath....

You know so few about Linux that you don't know that it has a GNU/GPL
license. So ATARI according to the license of GNU/Linux is required to
supply the ATARIbox' SDK free and open-source. Don't worry about how
to develop for ATARIbox, it will soon be available with GNU/Linux.
