Didn't Dave Baranyi recommend this series some time ago?

I don't know but maybe Dave can tell us more. But the series
came out in 1978-79 so he may not have done it then in raam. Maybe one
or more of the movies?

This was one of the series that I got to see thanks to my friend in Japan who traded tapes with me between 96 and 02. Haikara-san was re-broadcast on the "Kids Channel" satellite anime channel during that time. I'm pretty certain that I commented on it on r.a.a.m. at the time, but I'll have to go back into my copies of my old posts to see for certain.

I remember liking the show a lot.

OK - lazy me just did a search on "Haikara-san" here in Google Groups and it brought up a post that I did in April 2001 regarding the show. It's just as well that I looked my old post up - I was wrong about the show being re-broadcast on the Kids Channel. It was re-broadcast on NHK 2.

In any event, I liked the show then and still have fond memories, so if you have a chance to try it out, go ahead and let us know what you think.

I watched the first episode. It was a lot of fun and it's interesting to
see what 'fashionable girls' supposedly got up to a century ago. Benio
is a 17-year old tomboy and a 'fashionable girl'. However she lives in
an era where girls are expected to become dutiful wives and arranged
marriage is still the norm. A handsome lieutenant appears, but her best
male friend is a cross-dressing young kabuki actor. Live-evil evidently
got a digital master which looks crisp and colourful. It contains some
typically shoujo visual elements.
