Hello-
I have an old Mac SE/30. Haven't tried to turn it on in years. The last
time I turned it on, it booted up just fine, but now the fan spins and
nothing else much happens. The screen did come on, but it had horizontal
grey stripes and nothing else.

Is it dead? Is there an easy fix?

Many thanks,
Robin

Look up “simasimac”. The electrolytic capacitors on the logic board have leaked their electrolytic fluid and are no longer functioning. What’s more, the electrolyte is corrosive and can destroy the logic board if allowed to sit for too long. Simply “washing” the logic board may bring back some functionality but is not going to solve the problem in any sort of permanent way.

If you are good with a soldering iron, you can replace these capacitors yourself. Charles has a cap chart here: http://www.maccaps.com/MacCaps/Capacitor_Reference/Entries/1 989/1/19_Macintosh_SE_30.html

Charles also offers a logic board recap service. Details and contact information are on his site.

Not sure if it's the same issue, but I've seen something about washing the
logic board in a dishwasher to fix a similar issue. Do a scout around
Youtube. I was looking up quite a few classic Mac troubleshooting vids a
few months ago when I got my SE. I didn't have this problem per se, but I
did see some topics along those lines. Hope this helps.

This will NOT fix the problem,. It only washes the electrolyte off the board. Without the electrolyte inside the capacitors, they cannot retain their capacitance value. After enough electrolyte has leaked, the board will no longer work. Washing the board will only prevent corroded traces.

Replacing the capacitors is the only real “fix” for this situation.

I had Charles re-cap two SE/30 boards & check them out for me a few years
ago. They were doing much like yours are. He did a great job. They now
work great. Highly recommended.
