Hi everybody,
I am addressing to the members opf this community for important matter.
I am an administator of French Ethnomusicological Society, uniting the
scientists from French-speaking countries who study the traditional music
of the whole world. Recently we discovered in our archives the floppy
discks 3M for Mac having important archival information on them. The
question is to transfer these data on modern medium. We have a running Mac
PowerBook 520 in our posession, but no connection vires and no idea of how
to do it. Could somebody help - explain which kind of accessories, and
which kibnd of software?
Wille be very grateful, Olga Velitchkina, Paris, France

If you have access to a more modern Mac, and they’re 1.44mb high density floppies, you may be able to get by with a USB floppy drive (about $15 US or so https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q =USB+floppy+drive&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#q=USB+floppy+dri ve&tbm=shop ) and copy the files over.

This won’t work if they’re 800KB floppies. If they’re readable on the 520, you can do ‘Get Info’ on the disk to see what type it is.

The next thing I’d try is to get a compact flash card reader, like this < https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Transcend-PCMCIA-Card-Adap ter/1806051.aspx>, a small CF card and copy the files from the built-in floppy drive to a CF card, and from there to a more modern mac, via a USB CF reader.

There are AAUI to 10-base-T adapters that will get the 520 on to a Tcp/IP network, you can then use appropriate FTP or SFTP client to upload to some other system acting as a server.

I’d have to dig into some archives to find one that would run on the 520; I found references to a program called MacSSH but it doesn’t appear to be around any more. Back in the day I used to use Fetch <http://fetchsoftworks.com/fetch/download/> You would need to download version 4.0.3

Those adapters are also relatively cheap < http://www.ebay.com/itm/like/322431764639?item=322431764639& amp;catId=58058&mid=503280&sortbid=18&sdc_id=123 0401096362&rmvSB=true>

As to the appropriate software, it depends on what the original files were created with.

Good luck!

Compact flash for the PB 520 is not possible unless you have a PCMCIA card
cage and of course they are very rare. I had one but sold it 7-8 years ago.
I think your best bet would be to try the USB floppy - of course that
depends on what exactly is on the floppy discs, if it is something that
requires software on the 520 you would have a hard time using it on a
modern Mac.

Ah, yes I forgot they were optional…my 540 came with one, so I forget.
