I recall seeing these one-page advertisement drawn as manga in the back of
magazines in 1970s and can't believe that it's still going on. It's for
distance-learning calligraphy school (they didn't have internet back them
for online courses). In a single page, it usually depicts how having good
handwriting saves the day.

Apparently the company went through several artists over the years and
tweaked Miko's appearance and they just hired a new artist starting this
year.

The second artist was an assistant to the original artist. She must have
taken over because the original artist became too busy.

Apparently, the current manga is weekly on Twitter.

Also, 美子 is usually pronounced as "Yoshiko." Many kanji characters have
multiple pronunciations in Japan and there really isn't a straightforward
rule on how to pronounce them when they are parts of someone's name. I once
read a Japanese baby-name book and one common character had whopping twelve
ways to be pronounced.
