I am running it on a Microsoft Windows 7/64 PC. Will this bug be corrected in the next stable release?

Also, can you put a pair of 3.5" flippy disk drives in slot 5 specifically for 800KB disk images?--[Like the 5.25" floppy disk drives in slot 6 or the hard disk drives in slot 7.] And, I am not able to use/access the /RAM/ disk.

FWIW I see the flicker only in "full speed ahead" mode.

+1 for the 3.5" in slot #5

Hi James,

re. flicker in 1.26.1.1

Please can you give precise repro steps so that we can investigate this?

EG. What Apple II game/title are you using?
What Apple II configuration are you using (eg. II,//e, Enhance//e, what cards are in slots, etc)?
What are the exact steps to reproduce this?

Thanks.

Hi Marco,

For "full-speed" (unthrottled) emulation eg. enabled by holding Scroll-Lock (or disk motor on, etc), AppleWin will take some shortcuts when doing Apple II video updates.

Specifically it bypasses the cycle-accurate video updating. Instead it just re-renders the Apple II display every ~17ms (wall-clock time) and then only if the Apple II's video memory has changed since the previous time.

Due to the lack of cycle-accuracy then demos that rely on cycle-accurate video switching (eg. French Touch's ANSI Story: turn disk over / end-credits) will not be rendered correctly, and there will probably be flicker too.

Does this account for the flicker you are seeing?
If not, then let me know the exact repro steps, and I can take a look.

Thanks.

It is exactly as you write. I did not complain just to point out that under "normal" conditions I have never seen video artifacts.

Hi Tom,

I would have to reinstall that newer version to be exact, but from recollection, I just boot-up (slot 7) ProDOS and System Utilities, then drop out into Applesoft and press any key and it starts flickering from where a typed to the left and above randomly. I usually run at max speed, too; but I am not sure if the flicker does not happen at normal speed, also. I am usually trying to type CATALOG, first. I just stop right there and reinstall the old version.

Yours truly,

James Davis

Hi (again) Tom,

I am running AppleWin as an Enhanced Apple IIe. Nothing added, no additional cards in any other slots than what comes standard with AppleWin. I have the Hard Disk Drive in slot 7 enabled, the 5.25" Floppy Disk Drive in slot 6, and the Printer in slot 1. I think there is a /RAM/ disk, but it does not seem to work. I do not know how to add slot cards to AppleWin, nor how to modify it in any way other than the configuration control-panel that it comes with. [It is not like AGAT in that sense. But, AGAT does not work with standard disk images, so AGAT is not a good emulator because of that.] I do not use the sound features at all. AppleWin does not sound right at high speed, and I do not want to hear anything from it, anyway. I would like to know how to make AppleWin emulate exactly my real Enhanced Apple IIe hardware, but I do not know how.

Sincerely yours,

James Davis

Thanks for the details. I'm seeing something similar to what you describe, and will work on an update. I hope to be able to provide a pre-release build soon.
FYI: bug tracked here: https://github.com/AppleWin/AppleWin/issues/405

btw. The sound (emulated speaker & sound cards) gets muted when full-speed is active. (I know you said you don't want it anyway, but I wanted to make this clear for anyone else interested.)

Can you let me know what you are doing & what you expect?

Hi Tom,

OK. I boot into ProDOS 2.4.1. I select 4. Run another program. I tab through the volumes. One is /RAM/. It is empty. But, later, whether using the ProDOS System Utilities or ProSel CatDoctor or just from Applesoft, the volume does not exist. "MLI error: $45 Volume not found" is what I got when I tried to copy files to /RAM/ with CatDoctor.

After describing it, I think this is not an AppleWin bug, that it is more to do with ProDOS or ProSel or the /RAM/ disk not being properly installed or something.

Yours truly,

James Davis

If CD.EXT is present in the directory that Cat Doctor is run from, Cat
Doctor will disconnect /RAM and use auxmem (where /RAM resides) to load
the extra features that CD.EXT provides.

I've built, tested and pre-released a new AppleWin 1.26.2.3 version here:
https://github.com/AppleWin/AppleWin/releases/tag/v1.26.2.3

Let me know how you get on.

Hi Brian,

Thanks. Renaming CD.EXT to RENAME.CD.EXT works. Cat Doctor shows /RAM as the first volume in the list of volumes. And, I can copy files to it.

ProDOS shows it, too. Exiting to another program shows it in the tab list. PREFIX and/or CATALOG /RAM also works.

But the Apple II System Utilities still does not list /RAM in its list of volumes.

Does /RAM have slot and drive numbers associated with it? I do not remember.

Is it possible in AppleWin to enlarge it from 64 KB to 8 MB?

Yours truly,

James Davis

Hi Tom,

OK, the screen flicker is gone, but there are a lot of other BUGs now with it wanting to open the wrong path/directory/filename.ext. Like: when I have told it in the configuration control-panel what filename and where to save/load the Save-State file to/from; and, when I try to load up the floppy drives it does not remember where I did it from the last time. It always starts in the AppleWin program directory, and it uses the name of the floppy in slot 6, drive 1 for the filename. I will have to go back to the last good version 1.25.0.4 again.

Yours Truly,

James Davis

From the manual

Note: Only the file names of the disk images are stored in the .yaml file (not the full path). This allows you to move your disk image around or distribute them. If AppleWin can't locate the disk image(s), then it will prompt for the new location.

Is this a bug?

/RAM is S3,D2. Its driver only supports one bank of auxmem, so its size
cannot be changed. There are other RAMdisk drivers out there, that can
use extra auxmem; but i don't know how much AppleWin provides.

Oh, beware with auxmem RAMdisks, that most apps that use auxmem are
oblivious to their memory usage, and will step all over them, and get
stepped on by them. (I encountered this with AppleWorks 3.0, and
ProTERM 2.1, back in the day. Had some fun doing ghastly memory
corruption experiments. ;) )

Yes, slot 3, drive 2, catalogs as /ram. Thanks.

Also had the drive:\path\filename.ext problem after returning to v1.25.0.4 and had to re-establish the paths. So, this is probably not a bug, but will have to see if v1.26.2.3 can remember at each startup. It just threw me for a loop, when unable to start without being prompted for the disk images left in the drives. Do not really use the save state feature, but was experimenting with it. Do not like it. Why did you change the filename extension to two dot ext's? "SaveState.aws.yiml" is weird! Why not just keep the old name? "SaveState.aws" was fine.

We changed the file format for saved states hence the need to use a different file extension. The double extension is not (never?) seen on Windows but is on *nix (Unix implementations).

But you bring up a good point -- Tom, why didn't we just use a single extension?? Maybe this is something we should revisit?

re. v2 save-state extension, <file>.aws.yaml

In general, the save-state is a yaml file type, eg. it'll load in editors like Notepad++, and be recognised as yaml, allowing syntax colouring, hierarchical text folding etc.

And as a subset type, it is also an AppleWin Savestate file, hence the .aws sub-extension.

Windows allows and has no problems with this type of double-extension, AFAIK. Certainly it's been working fine for me for over a year now.

In fact, there's even precedent from Microsoft (from at least 2010). Just look at the Visual Studio meta-project files, eg: AppleWinExpress2010.vcxproj.filters

Agreed, I see this more and more on Windows, and it's a good thing.

A yaml suffix is a generic description of the type of content, like xml, and I usually bind all those types to a text editor.

You wouldn't want AppleWin to try to load any yaml file. Only aws.yaml ones.

In fact I usually go even further and name the file e.g. Disk.dsk.aws.yaml to keep files paired.

No, I think the intention is that you put the save state in the same directory as the disk images.

Then if you move them or distribute it all as an archive (e.g. send a bug repro to Tom ; - ) everything will just work.

Alternative behaviour might be:
- Store the path as a "hint" in the yaml to be used if the file isn't found.
- If the path *in* the yaml differs from the path *of* the yaml, prompt the user (e.g. use files in the yaml file's directory)

Cheers,
Nick.

Hi All,

OK. I see your point about *.aws.yaml files. You use it to multitask: Save a machine state pertaining to a particular disk image. I had not thought of it that way. I was thinking it was more about single-tasking: saving what you are doing because you just got interrupted and have to stop doing it until next time when you come back to it.

I still have to retry the new version to see if it can remember where AppleWin and my SaveState.aws.yaml file is between sessions. I will get back to you about this later.

Yours truly,

James Davis
