“Zero Kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho” aka “Grimoire of Zero” is an adaptation of a light novel series set in a magical world where humans fight witches, with half-human, half-beast folks wandering around. A Half-beast white tiger guy has become a mercenary and hunts witches because witches like to take the heads of half-beasts to help with their magic. He runs into a loli-sized witch who apparently isn't a kid and who has written a book on magic that could destroy the world. The book has been lost and so the witch, called Zero, is hunting for it and wants the tiger-mercenary to be her guard as she looks for it. So the two form a pact and wander off into the forest.
The first episode is something of a mess. There was lots of exposition, lots of “mago-babble” (the fantasy story equivalent of “techo-babble” in sci-fi stories), lots of cringe-worthy dialog, and not a lot of action. The protagonists are obviously supposed to be a “cute” couple, and the tiger-mercenary blushes a lot at the innuendos that Zero makes. All-in-all, I found the execution of the opening episode to be rather clumsy and I get the impression that things won't change a lot as the series goes on. So I'm not going to watch any more and my final rating is C.

I liked it because:
1. It is set in pseudo-Europe, or at least what I would call
pseudo-Europe. I particularly like the genre (or would it be sub-genre)
of anime set in the US like Kaleido Star, Chrono Crusade, and a short
list of others; Europe, such as Victorian Romance Emma, Gosick, and a
short list of others; or pseudo-europe such as this show, FMA, and a
short list of others.
2. It is not YAHSA (Yet another high-school anime).
The only thing I am not certain of is, is Zero (I believe that is the
girl's name) can conjur up a "rock prison" for the person that was
shooting arrows at them, why can't she conjur up a pot of soup?

The E-mail associated with the account is a "spamcatcher" account that I
got to every couple of months to empty out, and anything sent to it will
not be seen for probably several months, if it is seen at all.

Yes, it is.

Probably it's the same problem as cooking in Log Horizon: You need
special skills to do so otherwise it is tasteless. :-)
