A
detailed looked at some of the various modes included on the Saturn’s
port of Jeff Minter’s Tempest 2000 for the Atari Jaguar. Which in
turn was a remake of the classic Dave Theurer, arcade game Tempest.
It has to be said there a surreal, trance and slightly psychedelic
feel with the look and music of Tempest 2000. Remaining true to the
arcade roots this is a fast paced shooter, that see you blasting
monsters rapidly crawling toward you from the ground below. It
remains as playable now as it did when the original arcade released
and Tempest 2000 updates the format perfectly. The Saturn version is
pretty much a perfect port with a few changes here and there, the
biggest change is to the audio which now use the official soundtrack
version of the music. Our only compliant is the totally lack of boss
battles, which would have made a nice break to the format every 20 or
so stages.
