I was lucky to have this unit given to me for my collection. It "boots" up with a chime and goes to a grey screen with mouse pointer. The pointer will move on screen but there iarent any icons so on. The hard drive spins up but machine will not recognize any of the drives being there and I never see the folder/ ? Icon. Anyone have any idea what is possibly wrong? Assuming caps but want to double check.

Thanks
Robert

Try unplugging the scsi cable and see if the machine gets to the blinking question mark. Also try zapping the PRAM.

Have you removed the RAM,ROM and V-RAM SIMMS, cleaned the sockets and
reseated the SIMMS?Have you replaced the PRAM battery if not, what voltage
is it reading?

I removed all the items you have listed, didn't clean the sockets and yes
the battery was the first thing I checked and replaced.

Have you also removed any NuBus expansion cards that where installed? You
may also try a different video card if you do have a NuBus video card. But
failing that, it would probably be the Surface Mount Electrolytic
capacitors that need replaced.

It didn't have any cards installed, I am using the video port on the
mainboard. Honestly not sure that I have a video card that can be installed
in this machine, will have to research compatible video cards and go from
there.

an attached adb mouse and how long have you left it in the state you show
i.e.. 10 / 20 / 30 mins or do you just turn it off after five mins like
some people.

Hi Robert

To me that says that the Mac has booted but the termination on the scsi hdd
is not correct and it can not find the folders to load the system. Do you
have more than one hdd installed and have you checked the termination id on
each drive to see if there is a conflict because if both or more hdd have
the same id then what you currently have is what you get when trying to
load the Mac .

I have gone as far as removing all drives that where installed, floppy,
CDROM and hard drive. Even with all drives disconnected it still goes to
the grey desktop I described.

your problem.! Have you tried to boot from a system cd or a floppy ,Have
you booted with the extension off (holding down the shift key on boot if I
remember) Could you boot with just one drive connected and leave it for an
hr or more just to see if anything happens . also what are the specs if you
know i.e. ram etc

Tried a PRAM zap? Hold Command, Option, P and R simultaneously then turn the Mac on. You should get the startup bong. Keep holding the keys until it bongs a second time.

William,

No worries! Glad to get any suggestions/ideas I can. I have tried both cd
and floppy now and no joy. I verified that the cd and floppy spin up when a
disk is inserted. I let the system sit at the grey screen for about 2 hours
and nothing happened. I have not tried booting with extensions off yet,
will try after chow. As to the specs I'm not sure. It is a model M9020 and
since they guy that gave it to me used to work for a major greeting card
company I would assume it is on the higher end of the specs. I have even
tried booting to a tv and go the same grey screen and moues.

Try removing all but one RAM SIMMs then try booting. If that doesn't work, then try replacing the installed RAM with one of the ones previously removed. Obviously this presumes there are more than one RAM SIMMs. If there is only one then try replacing it with another RAM SIMM of the appropriate type if you have one available.

No worries. Last night I decided to pull the hard drive and test it in
another machine, it does work and reports in as drive 0, but I don't think
this is the original drive for the machine. It is a Seagate Barracuda
model ST32550N no Apple branding on the drive.

Hi Robert

did you take note as to what software was on the drive as it might just be
a simple as the software on the drive is not compatible with the quadra if
I remember the quad needed 7.1 through to 8.1

Surely with the drive unplugged, it wouldn’t matter and he’d get the flashing question mark?

This has to be a capacitors problem.

Have to admit it has to be the caps. Anyone have some simple instructions
on how to clean around the caps to see if it boot fully once before
replacing them?
