I figured out I was handling mixer device names incorrectly and it was basically breaking sound in Windows as a result (DOH!) so that is now fixed. Also JonCo asked (very nicely) for proper midi-out support and now you can do just that. Anyone wanting to play the Ultima-V soundtrack through an external synthesizer like the old days can do it with Jace too. :D

If anyone wants proper Midi-IN support please open an issue in github for that feature as well as some links to software I can use for testing the midi-in feature to be sure I got it right.

Much thanks to John Valdezco for a terrific write-up.

Lots of great info - except for how it sounds!

Still, very cool.

Cheers,
Nick.

I take it that's a jab at the MT-32? ;) I was always sufficiently pleased with the "Jervis" software midi synth that ships with Java, combined with the optional HQ sound fonts. But to each his own.

Actually I think Nick is wishing (as do I) that there were samples of what the MIDI sounds like through the MT-32.

Lots of pretty pictures and info, but no sound samples. :-(

Cheers,
Mike

Oh... LOL!! Well, I don't have an MT-32 but I can see about rigging something of a video if I can manage to clean off my desk and dig through my gear for my USB-Midi adapter.

No, I meant that John wrote a great HOWTO on getting it working, but didn't really say it sounds great or crap. He did describe one instrument choice as "doesn't sound quite right", but no indication is to whether all this was worth it. ; - )

A video would be great!

Replaying the Ultimas might be on my retirement list.

Cheers,
Nick.
