Hi all,

Quicksilver 2002 800 single cpu
Mac os 10.4.11 Tiger
172GB startup drive
280GB additional data drive (not part of startup user but includes
another user also on Tiger)

Recently this G4 has decided to shutdown when requested to sleep.

Occasionally it shuts down when not requested (while not working/
active).

I have replaced the battery, tried different startup drives, and...

removed power plug, removed battery, pressed power button, pressed
smu/pmu/? button on motherboard ONCE...

Apple 17" ADC replaced by an old 15" non-adc screen (as it seems to
be associated with sleeping - a timed screen sleep causes shutdown)...

all to no avail - it still cannot sleep but insists on a shut down.

Any ideas anyone?

Regards

Ged Cornish

First step: try resetting the PRAM : start up while holding down command-option-P-R and wait for the third startup bong before releasing it. ISTR fixing one of mine that was shutting down like this by clearing the PRAM.

There are also some system prefs files to delete listed here, but I'm not sure whether all of them exist in 10.4 or not…

Bruce,

Thanks for the link, I'll follow it through as I can - the slowness is
because whatever I do results in shutdown and then the G4 won't start on
the power button unless some time has passed (the fans start and the dvd
slot clicks followed by shutdown), maybe two hours left alone - that is
the only timing I have so far.

Restart and sleep result in shutdown, attempt to start with
commad-option-P-R also results in immediate shutdown, and the same if
power button pressed (without pram resetting) soon after shutdown.

However, the power button gets it started when pressed after a couple of
hours have passed.

Last night I deleted the preference files noted in the link - could not
restart.

This morning I have managed to reset the pram - and it has just shut
down again as I write!

At least the mac mini is going strong!

I'm thinking, from the delay, maybe a capacitor or similar is at fault?

I have just hit the power button and it is now starting with only a
short delay - maybe progress is being made!

If I get it fixed I'll let you know - if you don't hear from me it is
because I have let it go - it is only a backup mac but I would like to
have it working (and sleeping).

The screen has just blanked, followed after about one minute by shutdown.

Regards

Ged
