So I'm down to three new anime series out of the Winter 2017 crop. One excites me, one impresses me, and one amuses me.

The Force (of Cynicism) is still strong in “Youjo Senki”. I'm having a great time with this show. Our protagonist continues to try to install his own version of “How to Succeed in (the War) Business without Really Trying” into his personal re-boot, but the malevolent God/Demon still wants the Protag to Convert. One of the things I find the most hilarious about this show is that it is currently ridiculing the practice of so many corporations to force employees to “convert” and “believe” in the flavour-of-the-month Business Process Reengineering/Performance Review System/Mission Statement/etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. The underlying message in this series is not at all about religion, but about the Religion of Business. I've moved my current rating to “A+” after three episodes.

“”Shouwa Genroku” continues to provide an amazing series of performances by the characters and their voice actors. What is impressive to me is that the show can cause me to admire those performances even though I don't really like the personalities of some of the key characters. My rating is still “A”.

“Akiba's Trip” has turned into a real head shaker. It is goofy and dumb, but it is also satirizing every target in sight, even ones that I didn't think existed any more. For example, I would have never expected a satire of audiophile snobs in a contemporary anime. I didn't think that anyone even collected audiophile equipment any more, let alone having a teenaged character being shown caught up in it. So while this isn't a good show by any means, it does continue to surprise me in odd ways, and therefore I'll stick around for a bit more. Never-the-less, I have lowered my rating again, this time to “C+”.
