I usually avoid “Cute Girl” shows because I generally find them to be devoid of story, plot, characterization or any attempt at imagination. But three of the ones from Winter 2017 ended up on my Hopeless List because a lot of people were writing about them and I wondered if these three were any different from my expectations.

“Urara Meirochou” is a cute girl fantasy about cute girls learning how to be fortune tellers in a special city for fortune tellers. As with so many cute girl shows, the main characters can be classified as Dumb, Dumber, and Dumbest. The opening episode tried to differentiate itself by using bare bellies as the main fan service fetish, but one has only to remember “Yume Kui Merry” to see that it isn't an original idea. And that is the main problem with “Urara” - a lack of originality. Yes, there is a “mystery” of sorts in the question of the Mystery Mom of the Feral Girl, but in order to see if there is an answer one would have to sit through much more banality than I am willing to do. So my final rating is C.

“Gabriel DropOut” is a bit more ambitious than most cute girl shows because it attempts to show the “bad side” of some cute girls. The set up is fairly familiar (I can't help from having the theme from “Pita Ten” running through my head) – angel girls are sent down to Earth after finishing Angel School and must live amongst humans in order to learn how to help humans. Devil girls are also sent from Devil School to live amongst humans in order to learn how to curse humans. The gimmick here is that on earth the angel girls act like Devils and the devil girls act like Angels. There were some humorous moments in the first episode, but there really wasn't enough in the concept or to the characters to make me want to watch any more. So my final rating is C.

“Little Witch Academia” is the TV version of a much talked about OAV series from a few years ago. A Too Dumb to Live teen goes to Witch School, even though she doesn't have any magical powers. But she was hyper-impressed 10 years before by a magic show given by a witch girl, so TDtoL must attend magic school no matter what because she wants to be like her childhood heroine. TDtoL survives numerous life threatening situations that are caused mainly by her own ineptitude, but in the end she is saved and is able to enter school because she channels the spirit of her long-missing witch-heroine. The initial episode looked very good – obviously the A Team was at work at Trigger. But I found no reason at all for me to care about TDtoL, her situation, the mystery of the missing witch-heroine, or the witch school. So I won't be watching any more. My final rating is C+, mainly for Trigger's animation.

So what does this tell me? It tells me that Cute-Girls-Doing-Stupid-Things anime series are still not worth trying out and that my original expectations were correct.

I found the first episode of it quite entertaining, as there was plenty
of action, but it did not leave me with a strong urge to see more of it.

Sounds rather like The Worst Witch which has twice been adapted for TV in
the UK, by two different broadcasters.

I suppose school stories with unprepossessing heroine, stuck-up rival,
strict teacher etc, are not exactly uncommon though, and magical schools
seem to have become a popular genre.
