I had asked this on the Leopard Group, but nothing was showing up, and
nobody has posted there in ages anyways.

I have a Power Mac G4 Digital Audio with a G4 clocked at 533 MHz. I
installed OS X Leopard on an iPod to test, and it seems like it runs
somewhat fine (other than my fan clicking, which does not have anything to
do with Leopard). I currently have Tiger as the main operating system.

Should I upgrade the Tiger installation to Leopard? Loss of Classic Mode
should not affect me because I have a working OS 9 installation I can boot
to. Can I also keep that OS 9 installation on the same partition?

Since you are not concerned about classic mode then it should be fine. I do not know what you expect to achieve with the upgrade if Tiger is working well for you. Saying that, I upgraded my 933 G4 to Leopard and it is good and stable (10.5.3) - Although I DO miss my Classic applications now. Leopard boots a little faster but many people I have spoken to said Tiger runs smoother and sometimes faster on the G4’s. Check some online comparisons. Tiger having all the improvements made from OS 10.1, 10.2, & 10.3 ran nicely for me.

Personally on a 533 MHZ machine I think I would stick with Tiger unless you really want/need the new features in Leopard. Ram? I do not remember what the capacity of the 533 is but the more the better especially if you upgrade.

My 2¢ worth... I have a Powerbook G4 1.25GHz running Tiger 10.4.9 and a Powerbook 1.67GHz running Leopard 10.5x and the slower machine is faster and more stable. Sometimes the latest is not the greatest...

Off hand bloatware is bloatware.Asking you system to handle Bloat is just
asking for trouble.

A balanced system is always the most usable.Rarely is much if anything
gained by adding CPU load or leaning into more RAM overhead.

Words about iPod are strange. If you dare to upgrade, keep in mind that
Leopard officially works on 8xx Mhz CPUs and faster, you'll have to
tweak the installer. But that's easy, because the corresponding software
is easy to find.

You can take some other IDE HDD and try it there.

What I mean by "installing on an iPod" is that I used the iPod as a hard
disk and installed it there, NOT changing the iPod's OS to Leopard.

Do you ever use benchmarking?
Do you keep records of it?

go ahead, Benchmark your prestn OS. And also give it a task on a file to
accomplish like sending a 5 GB movie file to an external drive and write
down the time.

The install your dream OS and perform the exact same tests. Compare. Then
you will know for yourself and no one can second guess you or lead you
astray. You can always shift back.
