I just watched “Drifters” episode 5 and I had a great time with it. I'm reminded
of the old H. Beam Piper “Lord Kalvin” stories, which are still some of my all
time favourites from the later John W. Campbell days at Analog/Astounding.

What is really working for me in Drifters is the main characters. We have adult
characters who are thrust into a bizarre situation where they act according to
their adult beliefs and bias. The two main characters are essentially murderous
psychopaths when viewed from our perspective, but within their world of war they
are enjoying themselves immensely while following their own rules of moral
conduct. And this makes them totally exciting to watch.

There are so many other positives about the series. The battle scenes overflow
with gruesome intensity. The writing is smart. For example, while planning the
battles and eventual conquests Nobunaga is also setting up the precursors to his
next plan, which is to bring gunpowder weapons into this world. (Again,
reminding me of the Lord Kalvin stories.) And as a bonus the voice actors are
having tons of fun with their characters.

This series is showing that anime can be still be exciting even in these days
where cookie cutter “cute girls” shows fill up most of the anime world. Damn!
I'm so happy to be looking forward to an anime series every week again!

It's not bad, really. Probably it draws its excitement out of the
case, that it looks close to reality. In times like this wand wielding
lollies look rather outdated.

Btw, I am watching again "Visions of Escaflowne". It's quite a
differnce between honor driven actions, and the (historical
documented) successful use of shit to keep the enemy off from
regrouping.
