Power mac G5 1.8DP Tiger 10.4.11 all updates in place

This morning...

Woke it up, collected emails, deleted three, mouse froze, pulled it
out plugged it in, no joy, checked keyboard, nothing happening!

Force shut down, restarted, chime, low fan noise, no display (2x17"
ADC, one via apples power gadget into DVI).

Force shut down, restarted, held down T for Target Disc Mode, one
chime, no sign of drives on firewire connected G4.
Tried this several times including with display card removed *.

Force shut down, restarted, Cmmd+Opt+P+R, only one chime, no further
action.

Could this be caused by a duff display card - see *?

I moved the startup drive to the G4 with an ide/sata adapter and am
working off it now so not a drive problem.

What is more likely to be the problem?

What does anyone think I should try to do to resolve the problem
before looking for a replacement?

Regards to all

Ged

Check the PRAM battery voltage or simply remove and boot.

Try removing all the memory and re-inserting it. Then start up.

Remove all memory and clean the memory card contacts with a clean eraser, very lightly. Then re-insert them and start up.

Remove all but one DIMM and boot. Repeat with each of the other DIMMs.

With all the memory installed, remove any PCI cards other than hat is minimally necessary to get video out, disconnect all cables other than power and the minimal video and try to boot.

This reminds me a bit when my G5 2,7 DP died.

Turn out it was the memory controller soldering gone bad, thus it couldn't
pass the POST (Power On Self Test) phase.
Looks like it's something relatively common among around-2003 computers in
general (and G5s in particular).

But my G5 gave three flashes from the power-on light (signaling there was
issues with the Ram), and your doesn't, so maybe it has nothing to do with
this.
Anyway, try reading this page about the same problem I got:
< http://forums.macrumors.com/threads/power-mac-g5-three-led-f lashes-with-goo
d-ram-a-case-study.1676857/>

For anyone interested in this kind of solder issue,
Google "lead-free solder issue g5"

Have you reset the CUDA switch with all cables unplugged including the power cord?

Hi!

Since the problme accured while it was running, I highly doubt that it
is the PRAM battery. I guess that there was a short circuit somewhere
and that made it freeze.

1. Remove all power (cord + battery),
2. clean it (clean out the dust!),
3. disassemble what you can (remove and reseat memory banks, fans,
graphics card, everything you can grab without fear of breaking anything)…

4. Then let it sit there for a day.

5. Then, when everything is clean!, press the PRAM reset button
6. before restoring all power (put new battery in, connect power cord) and
7. then try to restart the damn thing.
8. And hope.

Resetting the PRAM prevents it from keeping corrupted data, which may
also prevent it from restarting. So, even if that was not the cause, it
makes sense to reset the PRAM:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1939
(some models have a SMU, see here:)
https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT1436

It may even run without a PRAM battery (leave the battery slot empty),
but even though I think it does I am not 100% sure. I would try it
anyway, so you don't have to invest in a new battery since you don't
know yet if the G5 will ever run again.

You can also try to use only minimum memory modules (only two = one
pair) to rule out broken memory modules. (Swap with the next pair if it
doesn't work).

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201689

Good luck!

Hi all,

I've tried all the options from the friends on this list but no joy.

However, after a good clean out of dust bunnies and re-seating
everything re-seatable,, I noticed that when I plugged in the power
cord the mac did not "click".

I'm sure it always did that previously - is that the hint I'm looking
for ?

Has anyone connected this non-action with a resolution, or even a "no
go"/"give up" result?

Think I said once before I thought the power supply was bad.

I had a 2005 2.3 GHz G5 with bad power supply. My symptoms were nearly identical to yours. These were known bad, and for a long time they were covered by an extended warranty agreement caused by a lawsuit against Apple regarding these power supplies.

You need to get a multimeter & a pinout diagram and test all the voltages. Mine had dropped a bunch, if I remember right, I lost my 5v lines, but the others were all OK. If yours is bad, you either need a replacement, or do the PC ATX mod.

No click-THAT sounds like a dead power supply, prior to that you were
likely running an capacitor juice, now it is all discharged. I agree with
Kris re: the diagnostic.
It is repairable, but not fun doing so - first locate a good, used PSU
(from any source), then steel yourself for a good afternoon's work on tear
down and reassemble. IIRC, it IS feasible to run the G5 in a sort of
"pre-assemble" mode (supply and motherboard, etc.in proximity of tis
destination but not affixed).
Best of luck to you,
Dana

Hi all,

Just to let you know I put in the replacement power supply and it
clicked nicely on power cord connection, but there was no more
activity from the G5 whatever I did.

Inserting the startup disk in my QS I scanned the logs and found a
series of complaints about cpu 1 so I decided to let it go and look
for a later model to replace it - I'm thinking imac now I have found
they can run two screens.

Thanks for all your help and to the list in general - it has been
very useful getting me over problems over the years.

Kind regards

Ged

I went from the G5 (DP 2.7 GHz) to an iMac (Early 2009 3 GHz) and it was a
whole new world :-)
Silent, beautiful machine with a gorgeous 24" screen, fast, and with a power
consumption just 1/3 of the G5! (from 300W to around 100W)

I'm loving it; only drawback, if you need to service something insside, can
be a hassle.
