“Natsume Yuujinchou Go”, the fifth anime season of the long-running shoujo manga
series, is here and I finally have a “guaranteed” enjoyable series to watch this
season. The story continues on from where the previous series left off – Natsume
is still teamed up with his youkai “sensei” Madara, is still giving back names
to various youkai, and is still caught up in the mystery of his grandmother's
life. But Natsume is also in a much more stable family relationship with his
adoptive parents as well as in closer relationships with his friends, so life
isn't as tough for Natsume as it was. Never-the-less, the very fact that Natsume
has daily run-ins with youkai keeps his life on edge, and the audience
entertained.
Despite the fact that it has been several years since the last anime series was
broadcast there is no sense of loss of continuity in the new series. The
animation, direction, voice acting and general feel are all still very familiar
and comforting. The old BGM is being used too. The series still does very well
all the things that last season's “Fukigen na Mononokean” tried to do and failed
at doing. I may not be watching many anime this season, but at least I will be
enjoying “Natsume” again.
