Real Life and even Gaming Life are keeping me from addressing the Fall 2016
Anime season as quickly as I might otherwise. But then, the Fall 2016 season
isn't doing a lot to induce me to put it ahead of cutting grass in either RL or
GL.
We've been a bit spoiled over the past number of years as various short and
ultrashort anime series have shown up and often delivered a fair amount of
humour that might not work so well if the humour were dragged out in a full
length show. Well, “Nanbaka” has just arrived to demonstrate this concept very
clearly. This half hour gag comedy about prisoners who can't be stopped from
escaping who are in an unescapable prison might have been an entertaining 4
minute ultrashort, but it sure is painfully unfunny when it is stretched out to
a half an hour.
Four “super escape” artists are imprisoned in a “super” prison for crimes
unknown, other than for escaping from other super prisons around the world. The
Super Escape 4 are goofs, as are the staff members at the prison, with the
exception of the assistant warden. The Super 4 constantly escape from their
cells and get into numerous gags that all fall flat as jokes. This isn't even
university level humour; this is high school level stand-up written by unskilled
joke writers.
The animation is bright and colourful. The action and dialog are fast. The
characters are uniformly loud. I was vaguely reminded of second tier OAVs from
the 80s and 90s. I can't see any reason to spend any more time with this.
