“Mob Psycho 100” is the new anime that I was waiting for this season, and it
surpassed all of my expectations. This story about a teen with psychic powers
and his “mentor”, a cheerful conman, is based upon the manga by One, the author
of “One Punch Man”. So stop here and think about it – if you didn't like OPM
there is little or no chance that you will like Mob Psycho, so you may as well
just skip it.

As with OPM, Mob Psycho is a cynical satire of modern Japanese society, with an
unaware protagonist powering his way past other people's problems. More than the
OPM anime, which was based upon the re-drawn manga, the character designs in Mob
Psycho are based on One's crude-and-rude designs. This isn't “cute” art and it
isn't supposed to be. The look is there for effect, and it is very effective in
providing skewering of character types.

But what is amazing is how Bones has integrated the strange look of One's manga
into a wildly psychedelic overall look for the anime. This is loud, brash, and
flashy to the point of no return. This is “Tatami Galaxy” on speed+.

I'm a total fan of One's works, and as such this interpretation of Mob Psycho
100 makes this season worthwhile for me. I haven't ordered any anime on disc so
far in 2016, but this will be the first.

Haha... I thought you would like this one. The crude drawing style took some
getting used to (unless you've read the manga/web-comic) but once I realized
it was a satire things began to fall into place. The style reminds me of
Cromartie High School in some ways, except for the psychedelic scenes. The
story itself in the first episode is quite simple, but the execution made it
interesting. Looking forward to what happens in the club.

I liked _One Punch Man_, though not as much as others did (my rating
was an 8), but I'm more hesitant about _Mob Psycho 100_. Saitama in _OPM_
was a consistent character, but so far I don't see any way for the main
character, Mob, to achieve the same level of consistency. I'll continue to
watch, and perhaps there will be an explanation of how he can be both so
observant and so blind.
