Kaizaki Arata is a 28 year neet who has trouble holding down a job and hides
the fact from his friends. He gets cut off by his parents who want him to
become more independent, so he is in dire straights. He is then approached
by a stranger, Ryo, who offers him the opportunity to turn back the clock so
to speak. Ryo has a pill that will change Arata's appearance back to when he
was in high school and allow him to relive that part of his life for one
year. To further tempt Arata, they will cover expenses and after the 1 year
experiment he will be offered a job. Arata, happy at not having to worry
about money for a year naturally accepts. His first day at school is
hilarious as he comes ill prepared and manages to embarrass himself in front
of the class and teacher. He also is shocked to see a young Ryo in class,
who is required to also take the pill and act as a supporter for the
experiment.

I won't spoil the show by detailing the humour, but this one pushed all the
right buttons for me. The dialogue was good, the humour was witty and the
delivery felt natural. What impressed me was that the characters were all
believable. Instead of the usual stereotypical extreme neet who cannot
interact with society, Arata is a somewhat lazy young adult lacking drive
and ambition. When he embarrasses himself in class, he is not immediately
mortified and shunned by every one in class. They take it all in stride as a
typical opening school day. Coming into the experiment, I wondered what my
attitude would be, having been thrown into this situation. With a 10 year
difference one would feel rather out of place amongst 3rd year high school
students, and that is just how Arata is portrayed. He feels out of place,
but also feels cocky in that his life experience should give him an edge.
The humour that ensues all falls into the realm of possibility. When he's
called into the teachers office, the dialogue that takes place is nicely
handled as well.

This is the best opening episode for a comedy that I have seen in a while,
so I really hope they can keep it up for a full season. I highly recommend
that you check out ReLIFE. Initial rating: A.

The premise of the show turned me off totally. I was reminded of the ending
scene in the Tom Hanks movie "Big", in which he asks his adult girlfriend to
change with him and be a kid again, and she refuses, saying essentially "who
would want to go through their teen years again?"

I actually knew a guy who did something similar at my high school back in the
late 60s. He enrolled as a sophomore and pretended to be an orphan. He played
one year on the football team and was a true phenom. Then it turned out he was
actually a 20 year old parole violator who had played football in junior
college and since he couldn't get into the pros or play more anywhere else he
"reinvented" himself in order to play high school football again.

I found it to be pathetic then, and still do now.
