Berserk was one of the old time series that old timers always raved about in the
old days when anime was hard to find and 7th generation VHS fansubs ruled
western fandom. I saw bits and pieces of it in the late 90s and found its Robert
E. Howard style thud-and-blunder to be uninteresting. So now we have a re-boot
of the series with modern anime technology and expectations.
The first episode of Berserk 2016 captures all of the ponderous and pretentious
schlock of the original with the added “feature” of having painfully bad CG. As
with the original versions the audience is given no reason to care about the
main character, his situation or his world. Everything comes across as
artificial as a setup for a shoot-em-up video game. It is obvious that the
creators of Berserk 2016 don't feel any requirement to create a story, instead
they are just attempting to provide gore-titillation. And they don't even do a
very good job of that. (Just think about how long ago it was that “Excalibur”
started the “crow eating an eye” trend in film.)
So there is nothing more for me in Berserk 2016 than there was in the older
versions. This sort of mindless chop-em-up show does nothing for me. I have no
doubt that lots of fans will be loving it to death while lots of other fans will
be screaming about how it differs from the manga. But I won't be following it
along side of any of them.
