So the Spring 2016 anime season is over. I didn't watch many series and there
were no superlative shows in the ones that I did watch. The most entertaining
part of the season was reading the blogs of the folks who continued on with the
shows that I dropped and seeing their anguish.

Two of the new shows that I watched in the Spring season were remakes of old
classics:

“Ushio to Tora 2nd Season”, completed, final rating: B+. This was a wonderfully
done throwback to the “grand old days” of shounen action series with all of the
traditional aspects of the genre covered very well.

“Sailor Moon Crystal Season 3”, completed, final rating: B+. This was an equally
well done throwback to the “grand old days” of shoujo action series, again with
all of the traditional aspects of the genre covered very well.

Many creators of contemporary “action” anime could learn a lot from how both of
the above series were done.

The other two new shows were new stories, although one was the continuation from
a series started last year:

“Concrete Revolutio 2”, completed, final rating: A-. This was by far the most
innovative and ambitious science fantasy anime in quite some time. The second
season didn't quite keep up the pace that the first season set, but it was still
impressive.

“Kuma Miko”, completed, final rating: B. This started out like any other “cute
girl” comic fantasy but quickly became quite cynical and relentless in how it
abused the lead character. And it delivered a totally unexpected epilog as the
lead character ended up with a full mental collapse.

And I am still watching three shows after years and years and years:

“One Piece”, episodes watched: 747, current rating: A-. Thank God! The Dessarosa
Arc is finally over!

“Meitantei Conan”, episodes watched: 822, current rating: A-. The Franchise That
Never Ends.

“Folktales from Japan” episodes watched: 220, current rating: B. The series is
now showing a lot of remakes and different interpretations of tales that were
told earlier on, but the story telling is still very good.

Ya, seen you post on Tenka Seiha on occasion. His rants are pretty funny. My
list is not that long either.

'Kuma Miko' had a simple premise. The young miko is a country bumpkin with
dreams of going to the big city while her bear friend tries to educate and
shelter her. Of course the results are often not what he anticipates. Quite
enjoyed this one.

'Re: Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu' (Re:Zero - Starting Life in Another
World) - I really wanted to like this show. Emilia is just way too cute to
waste, but nothing can make up for the idiocy of the main character. The
write ups on tenka.seiha.org are way more entertaining. The show still ranks
high on the number of viewers following it, but I wager that is due to the
harem and the hope that Subaru will have an epiphany. Not likely from what
I've seen.

'Joker Game' was a collection of Japanese spy episodes involving different
members of the spy organization, loosely tied to their leader, set in
pre-WW2. I watched the first 6 episodes but was not attracted enough to the
story to press for the later 6. I may follow up later if I have the time.
Writing was respectable for the type of drama but war stories tend to try
and glorify the source nation which can be a detractor.

'Concrete Revolutio' - There was a lot to like about this series. Great
visuals and cast of characters, and I like shows that blur the lines between
good & evil and have you questioning the motives of each side. My only issue
was how they jumped around the time line, and using the Japanese calendar
didn't help. Made things a bit confusing at times for me but the show was
good enough that I would watch it again to get a clearer picture.

'Hundred' ended up being a run-of-the-mill shonen alien/battle-suit/harem
series. OK if you're new to anime but too cliché otherwise.

'Kiznaiver' was the surprise of the season. In the grand scheme of things,
the show was basically about disconnected youth learning to form
friendships, kind'a like the Breakfast Club. The setting and motivations
were tied together nicely and while most characters got to make their own
little speech, it never felt preachy. I could readily sit through this one
again.

Had some extra time to watch previous material:
'Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka' (Is It Wrong to
Try to Pick Up Girls in a Dungeon?) The title kind of put me off when the
series came out, so I skipped over it, but it turned out to be a fun dungeon
romp. The MC is good natured in the extreme, but is portrayed in an honest
and believable way so as not to come off laughable or pretentious. No ground
breaking material, but plain old good fun.
