I needed to hook up an Agfa SCSI Duoscan to scan negatives, and it would
not be seen by the SCSI card in a G4 Quicksilver, so I dug a beige G3 266
desktop out of the closet. As I was trying different PCI cards, it started
to not respond to the power button. There were the correct power supply and
VRM on eBay from my own city, so I got and installed them. G3 still would
not boot from power button, but it would from keyboard. I removed the power
button and swapped it for one from a G3 MT parts machine, and still no boot
from the button. However, now the machine when shut down immediately
reboots, whether with no button, original button or the MT button. I have
to turn off the power strip to shut down, and it boots as soon as power
strip is turned on. Thoughts? Did I fry a circuit on the motherboard?

The Beige was the last desktop with built-in SCSI.

I have successfully used a Nikon LS-3500AF 4096 x 6144x30 ("4K" resolution
with 30 bits/pixel) on my Beige's built-in SCSI, using Nikon Professional
Products' plug-in for Adobe Photoshop.

IIRC, my licensed copy of Photoshop was sold with such and Agfa scanner,
which I later abandoned in favor of the Nikon scanner.

I assume you’re saying “I think I shorted out the power supply & VRM” but did you confirm either the power supply or VRM was bad?

Beige G3 are super finicky. The PRAM & NVRAM do NOT necessarily reset correctly using keyboard commands. The easy solution would normally be to remove the PRAM battery and press the CUDA reset button, BUT the beige has capacitors in the power supply & VRM that leak residual power back into the motherboard so that even with the PRAM battery & CUDA reset pushed the PRAM/NVRAM do NOT reset.

The ONLY way to reset the beige back to original PRAM/NVRAM settings is to remove the PRAM battery, and then also removed the power supply cables to the motherboard, pull the VRM, THEN press the CUDA reset button. If it still doesn’t work, let it sit 15 minutes with no PRAM battery or cables to the motherboard, press the CUDA again and reassemble.

I know this sounds kooky, like overkill, but I have a lot of experience with Beige G3’s and I’ve had many with crazy boot issues that “made no sense” which were all solved by disconnecting all the power from the motherboard and reseting with the CUDA reset button.

Different keyboard and mouse didn't change anything, but the startup and
shutdown problems ended when I changed monitors. I was testing it with an
AppleVision 1710 display, and that connects to the G3's monitor and ADB
ports, with the keyboard and mouse connected to the monitor. Something in
that connection began to mimic the startup key.
A 22" LCD VGA monitor arrived today, and with it connected to a 3DFX VGA
card in the G3, all is normal. Thanks.

A previous reply didn't get posted. Thanks Kris for the correct procedure
for resetting the motherboard. I'd removed battery and AC cord and waited
before pressing the CUDA, but hadn't removed the VRM.
As for the power supply, I was following the Troubleshooting
instructions in the service manual, but had not understood the pinout
diagram. I read it as plug layout and and got no 5v trickle there; on
MacForums it is suggested that the diagram is actually the pin layout on
the motherboard and orientation would be reversed on the plug from the
diagram.
Somehow the problem had shifted from no boot to no shutdown without
reboot. I began to wonder if the problem was coming from the ADB and the
keyboard start button. Changed keyboard with ssame problem, but when I took
the AppleVision 1710 display and its ADB connection away, all was good.

I can't quite remember, but didn't the cuda button have to be held down for 20 or 30 seconds. I remember it was in an awkward place to hold down for a while with the power board removed. It has been a long time since repaired one, which reminds me to dig out my 7300 and get that running again.

Have Fun
