It's dead simple: just follow the onscreen prompts.
There's only one rule for Migration assistant: You cannot use it to restore parts of an account that already exists on the target system. It's designed to move entire accounts.
For instance:
I have a new Mac B, my old Mac A with my user 'johnson'. I should NOT create a new user 'johnson' on Mac B, then try to run Migration Assistant.
Instead I should log in as a different admin user and run Migration assistant to move over my stuff.
If the new Mac is in pristine OS condition (ie: fresh install, no users yet) it's even simpler, you're asked during the setup process if you want to do it.
You can connect your old mac via FWTM, if it supports it, or connect your backup volume. (Migration assistant expects either a Time Machine or bootable volume for this way). The last time I did a bunch of these I used network too, but this was with MacBooks that didn't have firewire. I don't know if the DA supports it.

I’d say, Apple’s knowledge base (kb) is the first resource to look at. As
they’ve recently removed all the “legacy” stuff (anything pre-10.7), you need
to use the Internet Archive:

to emphasize and build on Bruce's advice above, here's how i would do it:
a) if you can install your G4 HD as a second HD in your G5:
install 10.5.x on the G5 new HD. during the setup dialog after install,
choose a user name other than the one that you used on the G4. i use Test.
run migration assistant, and since you're transferring from "another disk"
rather than "another mac" you don't need to go thru the "pairing" process
(my term) described in apple's KB article.
in the migration assistant dialog, choose to transfer everything that is on
your G4 HD.
after the migration is complete, log out of the Test user, and log in as
your normal user.
go to system prefs--users and groups and delete the user Test.
b) if you can't or don't want to temporarily install your G4 HD as a
second drive in your G5, then you will still set up a new user on your G5
after the 10.5.x install, but follow the steps in migration assistant to
transfer from "another mac" instead of from "another disk".
good luck

This is the way I like to do it, except that during the OS install, I
name the first account I create "admin", and leave it on the computer
"just in case" - once in a very great while, you need to login to an
administrator account that's different from your user account for
maintenance, troubleshooting, or recovery.

I tried it. Looks like in order to change a password on a 10.5 boot disk,
you need a 10.5 install disk.
Swell. Thanks,

Is this the only account on the system or is there another admin account you could log in as?
If there is, log in as that account, open Terminal and do the following
sudo passwd username
Where 'username' is the short username of the account in question.
This will change the login password, but it won't change the keychain password, but the old one might work for that.

And here's a way to do it if this is the only user on the system:
< http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2008041414063649 5>
The command to change the password in this hint:
dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
Will also work in the example I gave above, with the added advantage that this mayl also change the users keychain password. Again you'll have to do it as root by doing the command as follows:
sudo dscl . -passwd /Users/username password
Note the dot (aka period) in the middle of that command IS important.

I've used Migration Assistant successfully twice, as noted above the
new G5 should be cleared of previous accounts. I don't think it's a
app you need fear.
