I recently found my wife's old PowerBook 145B from college (don't ask how
long we've been out of college) and to my shock, it boots up and is fully
functional. This got me to thinking - what's the best way to transfer the
data off so we can relive those glorious college essays. I started by
purchasing an external floppy drive, thinking if I could transfer each file
to a floppy, I could read them on my MacBook Air. Unfortunately, the
PowerBook won't recognize any of the floppies nor will it format/initialize
them properly. In addition, the PowerBook does not have an ethernet port
(of course not; coax for token ring would've been cool but no) but I do
believe the modem's functional.

Question - besides taking it apart and going through the hassle of adapting
the 2.5 inch HD SCSI to USB via an adapter, mounting, etc., is there
another way to get this data off? It doesn't appear the drive's working
properly (since it can't format any drives but I could be wrong). Once the
data's off, we will likely consign it to eBay for a nominal fee as I'd hate
to see such a beautiful machine end up on the trash heap.

Just tossing out some ideas:

If you can find one, several companies made SCSI to Ethernet boxes that worked with Macs, Asante Ethernet/SC (iirc).

If you can find a newer older Mac with ethernet and printer ports you can set up localtalk from the 145B to the n/o Mac and ethernet to your modern mac.

You *might* be able to use a USB to null modem adapter: < https://www.google.com/search?client=safari&rls=en&q =null+modem+to+usb&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8#q=null+modem+to +usb&tbm=shop> a terminal program like Kermit on the 145B and some terminal hackery on the Mac side. It’s possible, but it’s been literally 20 years since I did anything like that.

If you are lucky enough to have or find a disk mode SCSI cable and a newer older Mac with SCSI and ethernet connect them that way and transfer over ethernet.

(I might have one of those cable I can lend you, in fact)

I would suggest a scsi zip drive for the pb145 and an usb zip drive for modern macs. This how I transfer files back and forth between my collection of vintage stuff and my desktop.

Have you tried with 720 kb floppies? A normal floppy can be converted to 720 with adhesive tape to cover the hole.

Oh well.

The Zip drive idea is good, save it’s been almost as long since I’ve seen a Zip drive as a PB145! :-/

Great suggestion on converting to 720 kb. I had forgotten the tape trick
from the good ole days. And thanks for the suggestion on the zip drive.
Oddly enough, I found her Jaz drive cartridge but no Jaz drive or zip
drive. Will see if anyone in the neighborhood has something. Thanks for all
the suggestions!
