I recently bought a SE/30 that was once part of a school network. When I
boot the computer is goes into a groupware environment, since I don't have
the username and password that is as far as I can get with it. Is there a
why to get to the base operating system? Or do I need to get some disks
and do a OS reinstall? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
John

Hello John,

To reinstall (your) software is the best approach. There is probably
software already on the hard drive which is proprietary and licensed to
the school system but not to you.

However, if you can identify the OS, which would be Mac OS 6.0.3-7.5.1
or 7.5.3-7.5.5 (according to everymac.com) you might google a way to
get into the system.

In any case, it's a good idea to have a set of OS floppies around just
in case. The old Mac SCSI hard drives (usually) eventually fail, even
more likely if the Mac has been in storage where the temperature varies
significantly. "New" replacement Mac SCSI I and II (50-pin, parallel)
drives are not easy to come by. If it should fail and the most
economical replacement drive you want to buy is not a Mac OEM, then you
will need OS 6 or OS 7 drivers for that hard drive. Floppies for these
(like FWB) are not that easy to come by.

You are lucky to find a working SE/30. Take good care of it.

Best Regards to all the Vintage-Mac community,
Jon Kettenhofen

I'd be interested in one! Just wondering where one might find an almost new
computer like that since they have been out of production for 25 years.

Hi Jeff:

I was an executive officer in a new disk drive company that was offering a
removable hard disk drive that made the apple mac very attractive to the
graffic design world. As apple is a closed operating system, we were not
able to work with them to make sure that our drive would work with all
there computers. So, as it turned out, I had to buy one of all there
computers to to make sure our drives would work with there computers. As
it turned out, all there computers were not the same, and we often had to
make changes to our drives. So, this Mac SE 30 was used 1, maybe 2 weeks.
We did not have to make any changes, so this computer was retired after,
and I eventually took it home, thinking it was a good one for my kids.
Turns out, we were hooked on the IBM, and this never got it out of the box.

Obviously, looks and works like new.

Rambling over.

Let me know if you would like all the details and photos.

Brent ............ Thinking I would sell it for $800. About 5 years ago, I
sold all the other models for $700 to $1000

Were you with SyQuest? Or was it the company that made the ORB drive?
