The top 10 lists on youtube by WM, which I have talked about several
times, have very high production values, well written scripts, and the
guy that narrates them sounds like a professional voice actor (in fact,
he probably is, at least in the fact that he probably gets paid for the
WM gig).
On the other hand, it seems that what is actually motivates it is the a
thought that goes something like "we need to make a top 10 list every day
to keep up our revenue (and suckers like me click on the lists to do just
that, or at least I do when there is an "anime-related" list).
They have the feel that they have a wall with several "anime-related"
topics such as best 10 shows, best 10 themes, etc., the another with
several "movie-related" topics such as best 10 movies, best 10
performances by <insert name of movie actor here> (perhaps they have a
whole wall for that one, because there seems to be a lot of "best 10
performances" videos), another for TV, music, and other pop culture
elements.
Then to select their top 10 lists for the next week, they go to the "anime
wall" and throw a dart at it, then do the same at the "movie wall," and
so on.
They claim to get ideas for their lists from surveying their 500k or 1M
watchmojhoics or however many there are, but after <new list every day> X
<however many years WM has been pumping out lists>, I have to wonder if
any method is "better than" throwing darts at a wall.
On the other hand, BCG's videos are little more than just him basically
talking in front of what is probably little more than a webcam, and
perhaps does not even have a script, just a list of talking points.
However, I like his videos better. I don't think he does it to make
money, he might make a little, as some of his videos have over 100k
views, but I don't know if the account is monetized or how much
monetization there is on such accounts.
The motivation, however. seems to be that he wants to talk about a
certain anime, or chooses one based on the suggestions of his relatively
intimate subscriber base, and not a motivation to pump out a video for
his "business."
As for his "anime expertise," I suppose I would rate him somewhere
between "certified expert" and "knows a few shows that have been on CN or
AS," but at the very least is a very enthusiastic fan.
Here is a link to his channel so that you can make your own judgment if
you wish: https://www.youtube.com/user/BlackCriticGuy/.
