“Hai no Gensou no Grimgar” is an adaptation of a light novel about kids finding
themselves in an RPG-style world where they have no memories of the real world
and must learn to be fighters or die. Not the most unique premise, but is it
worth seeing what they the do differently with it?

Well, no. The first episode was painfully dull, other than the occasional foray
into boob fan service. The kids know nothing at all, even how to play RPGs, so
they have to learn all the rules from start. And this RPG world is a throw back
to 1980s-style bare-bones RPGs. So what the audience has to do is to watch a
bunch of total beginners try to learn to level-up from scratch with no real
instruction.

In general, watching someone else play an RPG is pretty boring. Watching a total
beginner learn to play an RPG is even worse. Sure this anime attempts to “spice”
things up a bit by having a busty NPC on screen for a few moments, and then have
everyone focus on the boobs of the girls in the party for a few moments, but
that still does absolutely nothing to make the episode at all interesting.

The LN readers are all loving the first episode to death. God bless. I'd rather
chop down 336 trees in order to fletch 336 bows and then pick 336 pieces of flax
followed by weaving 336 bowstrings from those 336 pieces of flax, and then
stringing 336 bows 14 at a time from the 336 fletched bows and 336 woven
bowstrings than watch more of this. (And there is no chance in Hell that I am
doing that again in any RPG!)

BTW – my bet on the story set up is that this is a variation on the “Angel
Beats” set up, but if it isn't I still don't give a shit.

My final rating is C-, only because of the backgrounds and the boobs on the
Thieving Teacher, otherwise it really deserved a D.
