“Bubuki Buranki” is a new original sci-fi action series from Sanzigen. It has
caused some discussion because it is 3DCG, but that certainly wasn't something
that I found terribly noticeable while I watched the first episode. What I did
notice was that the set up and story were very familiar.

We start out in what appears to be an idyllic forested setting with ancient
ruins covered by plant growth. Two six year old twins frolic through the forest
and get into mischief, such as climbing up an ancient “Neo Ranga”-style mecha-
golem giant. Of the two twins, the sister is aggressive, outgoing and easily
demonstrates some sort of psychic powers. The brother is whiney, timid, and less
easily demonstrates a similar sort of psychic power. They live with their loving
parents, and their mother has a grownup version of the power that the kids show,
although Mom's power is blue like the boy's power while the daughter's power is
red.

It turns out that there are lots and LOTS of these giant mecha-golems in this
land, and Mom's job appears to be to keep the mecha-golems somnolent or at least
docile. However, Mom is sick and she can't handle the job well any more, so she
and her husband decide that she needs to teach her twin six year olds how to
handle the job. The daughter overhears her parent's discussion and decides that
she needs to take things into her own hands, so she takes Mom's magic power ball
and goes back to the mecha-giant to try to control it. Things don't go well at
all and other mecha-golems start to awaken.

Mom and Dad decide that Dad and the kids need to go back down to earth while Mom
fixes things up. So Dad and the kids are sent down to earth in Mom's mecha-golem
from Mecha-Golem Land which is apparently orbiting the Earth in low orbit. When
the mecha-golem crashes into a harbour there is a large explosion.

Flash 10 years forward and the son, who has just returned from being away from
Japan for 10 years, is now on the run from some sort of robotized authorities.
The son is captured and is being interrogated when a teenaged girl with magic
mecha powers comes to his rescue. More teens with magic mecha powers arrive to
help the son and the girl escape. But an evil organization, run by a red-haired
girl, that runs Japan by use of evil magical powers sends out a magical assassin
to kill or capture the kids. Finally, the kids reach the dungeon where mecha-
golems are being kept prisoner. While the rest of the kids try to stop the
assassin, the son runs forward and finds his Mom's mecha-golem that took him
back to the Earth 10 years ago, but it is now chained up and stripped down like
a scrap EVA.

So the first episode was fairly paint-by-numbers as far as the set up is
concerned. Sure, there are questions, but since this series will be two seasons
long there will be plenty of time to either answer or forget the initial
questions. But I just can't care at this point. Too much of what I saw and how
things were set up were just too familiar. There is no sense of wonder, just a
feeling that each episode will be a list of routine items to check off. Compare
this opening to the opening of “Concrete Revolutio” last season – there the
opening episode was confusing as hell, but it was intriguing. I just did not
feel intrigued at all here. So I'm not continuing with “Bubuki Buranki” and my
final rating is C.

Dave has given an excellent synopsis of the first episode. I have also
seen the second episode, in which teens with magical powers battle an
adult group with magical powers and try to get control of a mecha-golem.
The adults are led by a red witch with a chilling evil laugh.
I'd sum up the series as being gorgeously animated but otherwise
derivative and verging on annoying.
