“Divine Gate” is a new fantasy anime that is based upon a game and appears to be
aiming at the Angst Award of the Season. In some rainy fantasy future the world
of Mankind has merged in some manner with the worlds of Heaven and Hell,
resulting in some humans receiving god-like powers, some level of cross-world
movement by residents of each world, and a shared dream of reaching a “Gate” of
some sort that will allow the god-like power folks to “achieve their dreams”.

A super moody teen walks in the rain without an umbrella and has extended
pretentious inner monologs about life, water, and, as the Smothers Brothers used
to say, “Mom liked you getter”. Angsty Aoto sleepwalks into a train where a
demon has decided to go nuts and burn people. It turns out that Angsty Aoto has
super-water powers, and of course, water puts out fire, so he stops the demon
just before a couple more teens rush into action. The other teens are licensed
to act because they attend a super power HS. Angsty Aoto disappears and the
other teens are assigned the job of recruiting AA, although he has refused to
join the school many times before.

Although this is supposedly based upon an action game, there was almost no
action. The dialog was embarrassing, the characters cliched, and the general
set-up was painfully trite. The ending animation suggested that eventually there
would be some action in the future, but I can't see any good reason for me to
hang around and wait for it. My final rating is C-.
