“Boku Dake ga Inai Machi”, aka “Erased” is a new mystery series with a fantasy
element. A twenty-nine year old unsuccessful manga-ka named Sataru works as a
pizza delivery guy in order to make ends meet. Sataru has a secret: every once
in a while, and totally beyond his control, he will “slip” back in time a few
minutes and repeat his actions, but with a subtle difference. At some point
during those few repeated minutes he will notice something that is different,
and from that he will have an opportunity to save someone's life.

At the beginning of the episode we see this happen – Sataru is able to save a
child's life but by doing so he gets into an accident and is sent to hospital
with minor injuries. Sataru ponders his strange “gift” and remembers a time when
he was a kid and was not able to save someone. Sataru's mother shows up and
stays with him a few days during which Sataru once again goes into a time slip
and this time his mother spots a suspicious figure from somewhere in the distant
past. But the suspicious figure has also spotted Sataru's mother watching him
which sets into motion some horrific events.

Okay, up until this point we have been enjoying a reasonable well done adult
mystery. So what happens now? Sataru gets caught up in the horrific deed done by
the suspicious figure and is mistakenly arrested by the police. Does Sataru slip
back a few moments in time to confront or pursue the Suspicious Figure? No, he
slips back eighteen years and finds himself a ten year old again, a month before
that missed opportunity in his childhood.

Huh? So instead of giving the audience an adult mystery with a fantasy edge the
writers decide that the audience wants to see yet another kid detective series.
It appears that the idea of creating an adult mystery with adult protagonists is
too far out of the comfort zone of the writers, and that they think that their
audience will want to see a more melodramatic “Meitantei Conan”.

Well, I already watch Meitantei Conan and I have been doing so for 20 years. It
is fun and smart. I have no interest in watching a variation on that theme that
is melodramatic and predictable. So I'm going to finish by calling “Erased” a
lost opportunity with great potential and drop it. My final rating is C+ because
otherwise most everything done in the episode was done fairly well.

It wasn't bad until the mother got murdered, at which point I felt the
story was becoming less interesting and the prospect of a child drama
not appealing. (That female co-worker was very cute.)
