George Lucas splits with 'Star Wars' after 38 years,
cites irreconcilable differences
----------------------------------------------------
"Star Wars" creator and original director George Lucas
had little involvement with the forthcoming "Star Wars:
The Force Awakens", but he recently confirmed it to be
his last film with the franchise.

"The issue was ultimately, they looked at the stories
and they said, 'We want to make something for the
fans,'" Lucas tells Charlie Rose on "CBS This Morning".
"People don't actually realize it's actually a soap
opera and it's all about family problems ‹ it's not
about spaceships."

After selling his Lucasfilm to Disney in 2012, the
creator states that he has officially ended his
relationship with the franchise that made him a
household name.

He continues, "So they decided they didn't want to use
those stories, they decided they were going to do their
own thing so I decided, 'fine.... I'll go my way and I
let them go their way.'"

The famous creator says that he will have absolutely
nothing to do with the installments to follow. Release
dates for "Episode VIII" and "Episode IX" have been
announced for 2017 and 2019, respectively.

Lucas further explains in an interview with Vanity Fair
why he decided to back off from "Episode VII: The Force
Awakens".

"You go to make a movie and all you do is get
criticized," he says. "People try to make decisions
about what you're going to do before you do it. It's
not much fun. You can't experiment. You have to do it
a certain way."

Although the "Star Wars" films have strayed away from
Lucas' original vision, the filmmaker says that he has
other stories on the horizon. "I will be directing
movies, but not movies generally that will be shown
anywhere," Lucas says.

For better or worse (and I'm hoping better) Lucas split with Star Wars when he sold it to Disney. His only role in the new movie was an advisory role. Others involved in the original trilogy have been involved in the new one and I think it's important to remember that while Lucas created Star Wars, it wasn't his work alone that made them great. I'll always hold Lucas in high regards for creating my favorite childhood movies but the prequel trilogy was a disappointment, in part because he kept too much control. He should have allowed others to direct as he did with episodes V and VI and should have probably also delegated more of the screenwriting tasks. Lucas is probably too much of a control freak to work well with a new owner of his life's work but if he really wanted to create new Star Wars movies himself he probably shouldn't have sold it in the first place.

He *shouldn't* have sold it. Lots of signs point to him going senile.
Supposedly he sold it to provide for his family and spend more time
with them (including the new money-grubbing wife half his age and baby)
.... both of which he could have done without selling to anyone else,
and would have made him far more money.

He was of course already working on new movies when he sold to Disney,
but didn't want to have another multi-year, all-consuming commitment.
He could simply have handed the day-to-day running, as well as the
producing and directing, to others.
