I have been having trouble with my network. It runs really slow.
I have the wep enabled on my router which it a Netgear WNDR 3700v4.

I know mostly nothing about this. I did find the network logs and noticed
my system is routinely under land attack, whatever that is.

Considering I have Charter as my ISP and it is supposed to be the fastest
internet in these parts according to their ads. They have a network tool
that runs flash and I have a DA G4 which won't run flash I have no network
tool.

This is my log from today.

I have an iPhone, I have 2 TIVOs I also have a NAS drive. I have a G5 on my
system, which I don't use.

I saw a C/Net video some time ago interviewing some network smart guy who
suggested the best protection
for it would be WEP something or other. I can't specifically say what it is
because it has been a year or
two but when I saw this I activated WEP standard this guy talked about.
I made sure of that. I don't know what is going on. I use the latest
TenFourFox for a browser.

It is usually hopelessly slow.
Does anybody have any ideas. This would be greatly appreciated.

Thankyou,
Mark

WEP is a very poor protocol to use nowadays, it can be cracked quite simply; you should instead use WPA, which all your devices should handle. WEP/WPA also only applies to devices connecting to the router manually, and really won’t affect the speed of the internet.

Pretty much anything with an outward-facing IP address is hit all the time, and unless there’s an enormous number of them in the log (as in nothing but ‘land attack’ entries for hundreds and hundreds of entries, coinciding with your network slowness) they’re nothing to be worried about.

Yeah, welcome to the wonderful world of lying, I mean advertising.

Try DSLReports.com they have tools that do not require flash.

Does the MAC address here correspond to any of your devices? If not, someone’s gotten on, likely via cracking WEP.

I would connect a computer to a wired port on the router, turn off the wifi, reset the security to WPA and set a new password. To be doubly sure (and this is only a non-annoying option if you only have a handful of devices) is to specifically allow only your devices to connect to the wifi via MAC Address restrictions.

To be absoluetly sure, I would consult the documentation for the router and reset it entirely to factory settings; then disable WEP, enable WPA, with a strong password, and restrict local network access by MAC address.

You can see a bunch of your devices identified in the logs so they’ll be easy to add.

>

All websites, some websites? Between devices on your local network? Computer to computer? Computer to NAS?

> Does anybody have any ideas. This would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, the first thing to do is to identify your bottleneck.

The VERY first thing I’d do is restart both your cable modem and your router (if they’re separate devices.) Consumer level routers are generally poor performers over long periods of time. If a reset speeds up your internet, it’s probably time to start looking for a new router.

Shut off everything but one device (either your iPhone or the Mac, either the G4 or the G5.Personlly I’d use the G5 to eliminate system performance issues.

Then go to http://www.dslreports.com or http://speedof.me to test your speed without using Flash. This will tell you if your slowness is your network.

If those tests tell you your network speed is ok, then the issue is your browsers/systems or the sites your visiting, most likely.

I got an ap called net gear genie. I turns out I have eps enabled.
When I got this router it was the latest and greatest gigabit. I have two gigabit switches, also netgear I thought my da G4 was also gigabit.
Thanks

Huh? My brain meant ‘connecting to the router wirelessly’ I have no idea why mu fingers typed ‘manually’…Sorry!

Network performance is a multi-factored thing. The ‘gigabit’ specification is for the wired ethernet portion of your router only. That doesn’t apply to wireless, which is what WEP applies to.

Moreover, the network interface is only part of the performance puzzle. Apparent network speed (unless you’re taking care to measure it properly) is affected by System I/O, and whatever programs you’re using.

At work I was working with a professor who was claiming that n way was his network port working right; his download speeds were too low. Gigabit ethernet all the way through; it turned out that his bottleneck was poor disk perfomrance on the Mac Mini’s he was using in the lab. The stock hard drive in the Mini at the time was a horribly slow 5400 rpm SATA drive; when we replaced the drives with SSD’s his download speeds went up by 45%.

(he was downloading huge data sets from a NIH server, 100-200 GB)

If you’re judging your ‘network’ speed by ‘how well I can browse the internet’ you’re missing a bunch of potential bottlenecks:

the originating site may be slow
your local cable environment may be congested
your router may be misbehaving
Your computer may be suffering slow throughput for any number of reasons:
slow Disk IO
slow memory
slow CPU (You mention this is a G4…compared to modern processors it’s an antique)
Something else going on on the computers that are causing it to be slow.

Software that’s not compatible. TenFourFox is a great product, but it’s still not completely compatible with modern standards. Try a different browser; see if you an borrow someone’s newer Mac for testing.

I’d start with the suggestions I mentioned in my first email:

Reset your router to use WPA and use a good hard password and limit your router to only the devices you own. This will eliminate people leeching off of your bandwidth.

Reboot your G4 in safe mode (which clears a number of caches that can cause system performance issues), then restart it normally.

Ensure that your web browser is the only thing running on the G4.

turn everything off but the G4, then use a non-flash network speed test, as noted in the earlier email.

Do the same tests, but with the G5 and/or your iPhone (and with the G4 turned off) This will eliminate/point to hardware issues with the G4.

Do this at different times of day, too. Depending on their topology, Charter’s network could well get really slow in the evening, when everyone queues up a netflix show or something.

THIS will be the best test you can do, imo, of your actual network speed to your door. If that isn’t up to speed it’s either your cable modem or it’s Charter.

If those tests show a good speed, then the issue lies elsewhere in your systems; and it’s less likely to be the network than the computer software and hardware, or it’s the sites you’re using (even the fact that those have slowed down over time is not an indication that it isn’t their fault…)

It’s a slow process; you need to test one thing at a time.

Thanks for the help.
I just upgraded to tenfourfox 38.2.1 and it's noticeably slower. But there is other things going on because it wasn't too fast to begin with. The two slowest things on my network are most likely the G4 and a series 2 TiVo with a usb network adapter. Everything else, my tv, series 3 TiVo, the bluray and the charter had cable box should be ok.
Thanks
Mark

With respect, I'm going to call crap on this remark. Please elucidate as
to which standard it doesn't measure up on. With the exception of WebGL
and OpenGL, which aren't supported on every system anyway, it supports
everything Firefox 38 ESR does.

You guys have been telling me that DA G4 is probably the slowest thing on
my network. I looked up the specs and the ethernet port is 10T, 100T,
1000T. I am pretty sure that means gigabyte.

I have been looking at PCI cards and there don't seem to be any listed G4
Mac compatible gigabit cards listing on eBay. I saw a PCI-X one from a G5
but I don't think that will work. I looked at airport
cards and I do have two wireless networks available but I only use them for
my phone. I probably just ought to get an intel that isn't too old or
expensive.

Thanks,
Mark

The slowness of your G4 has nothing to do with the ethernet speed; rather it’s the rest of the system that is likely slowing the computer down.

Yes, it has gigabit ethernet.

It also has 133MHz RAM versus modern Ram which operates at nearly 10x the speed; a CPU that has one core, versus 2 or 4 in modern CPU’s (and this discounts hyper threading which lets the CPU behave as though it has twice as many cores), CPU’s that themselves are running 2-3X faster than the G4.

The hard drive is also slower at transferring data to the system, even if it is a 7200RPM drive, because the IO bus runs at 133 MHz.

Network throughput can be measured, but ‘how slowly XYZ web page loads' is not one of the metrics; this is dependent on the entire computer, not just how fast the bits come through the pipe. It’s unlikely (especially if you’re not seeing this kind of slowness with other systems on the same network) that it’s just the network.

Cameron, I’m sorry; I spoke from a position of ignorance; you are correct, it is standards compliant.

I found a page at XLR8 your Mac where users reported dealing with non apple
pci gigabit cards. It turns out a lot of them, or at least more than enough
are compatible with 10.4x without any special drivers. I got a used one
coming from eBay.

I was looking at my hard drives and they are something like 80% full. I
have 120GB and 320GB. I'm thinking about replacing the 120 with a 500 and I
am
also looking for an i5 or i7 Macbook, 27 imac or a Mac Pro.

When I run my DA G4 with contemporaneous software, from the early 2000s it
does well. If I run newer stuff it gags.

Thanks for the Help

Yep, I think this right here is the biggest clue to your performance issues, sadly…modern software presumes a certain amount of computing horsepower, in terms of CPU and IO.

Thus it has always been; Applewriter ran well in 64K with 360K floppy disks on my Apple ][+; TextEdit takes 6.1 mb on disk and that doesn’t count that probably 50% of TextEdit’s code resides in standard OSX libraries elsewhere on disk. After opening a 2K text file, it takes 14 mb of RAM.

MS Word 2016 preview weighs in at 1.49 GB on disk...
