Hi lurkers and posters,

It "Just So Happens" is not a manga. It is by Fumio Obata, a
man living and working in the UK.
The story is about a girl in a similar situation who returns
to Japan to help bury her father. Along the way she reminisces about
a previous trip and other matters, we get to meet some interesting
people including her divorced intellectual mother.
The book is left to right and the art is not generally like
manga art, Fumio Obata captures the variety of London and the
uniformity of Tokyo in the art as well as the rigidity of tradition
and family structure in Japan. The protagonist is torn between two
cultures but intends to wed a UK man.
We do not get to meet him but he is supportive of her while
the family and the culture are trying to mold her to be a 'nadeshiko'
obedient to the old women and to her male relatives which is shown
cleverly.

Seems to be published by Abrams ComicArts of NYC at $19.95
Very Good Graphic Novel which I found yesterday at the SFPL Main.
