Best browser Power Mac G-4 OS 10.5.8? [message #295774] Fri, 17 July 2015 11:38 Go to next message

I still am using a Power Mac G-4 1.25 dual using OS 10.5.8 on a daily
basis for some work using the internet. I can no longer upgrade Safari,
Firefox or Chrome. Is there another browser that may interface better with
the internet, or do I need to consider this computer near the end of it's
life (in terms of the internet)? I do have newer computers (an iMac 2009,
and an ipad), but I am reluctant to give up on this old warhorse!

Any ideas?

I rather like this one. A "mod" of firefox for older Mac OS.

I use TenFourFox (Firefox for G-series Macs) on 10.5.8 on my 1.25 GHz Mini
[ * ] .

There are different versions for different processor chips, so you have to
invoke TERMINAL and use the MACHINE function to discover if you have a
plain vanilla G4 (7400, I believe) or an updated G4 (7450, I believe).

[ * ] This has been converted to be a server by eliminating the optical
drive and installing a caddy which accommodates a second internal hard
drive. Alas, the default for this device, is Master so a mini jumper
(shunt), as from a 2.5" hard drive, must be used to select Slave for the
second hard drive.

I found a tip before on using SeaMonkey. They still make PPC builds and it works pretty good for me.

I heard that TenFourFox doesn't come with flash player though. Maybe that is the case? I would be curious to see speed comparisons with TenFourFox and a few other browsers still supported on 10.5.8. Do any of these support HTML I wonder?

I have the same machine and OS and have been using TenFourFox and like it.
It is much faster than Safari. The only drawback, as others have pointed
out, is that Flash videos are not supported. However, there is a TenFourFox
"add-on" that allows you to download Flash videos and play them in
QuickTime. TenFourFox *does* support html5 video.

TenFourFox comes in at least two versions, one of which is for 7400
processors, and another which are for the later 7450 processors.

Based upon recommendations of security folks, I have removed Flash from my
machines.

Use your browser and point its search key to "remove adobe flash".

That should get you to ...

https://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/uninstall-flash-play er-windows.html

... or a similar adobe.com link from which you can download the
uninstaller which is appropriate for your specific installation.

TenFourFox comes in at least two versions, one of which is for 7400
processors, and another which are for the later 7450 processors.

Based upon recommendations of security folks, I have removed Flash from my
machines.

--------------------------------------------
My reply:

There is at least one other version of TenFourFox for G5 processors. When I switched from a G4 to a G5 the 7450 version was installed on the cloned HDD and it worked just fine. Later I upgraded to the G5 version. And I do not miss FLASH. --glen

I agree that flash player should be up to date. Unfortunately plenty of gamed my kids play online require it. It's a double edged sword. Its really sad that apple decided to stop maintaining the PowerPC platform. The Open-source community and BSD communities are proof its not impossible to port things over to this platform still...

If only chrome worked on PPC platforms because it keeps its own version of flash player up to date with its browser.

Flash Player has nothing to do with Apple supporting or not supporting the PPC platform, as it’s an Adobe product.
