Do these fan films ever legitimately license the rights to Star Trek or
do they just cross their fingers and hope to avoid a C&D?

As long as they aren't trying to make a profit or discredit / disrepute
the franchise*, the studios usually turn a blind eye.

* Of course, the idiotic reboots by Beavis & Butthead, and JJ Abrams
have already killed the franchise anyway.

Yeah. And CBS seems kinda relaxed about it.
I think that might change the moment they become serious about an actual
new official TV series. Otoh, the first fan projects began when
Enterprise was still on.

There are over a half a dozen serious 'fan' projects out there.

Not just CBS. There's plenty of fan stuff for other franchises - Star
Wars being probably the other major one for fan-made stuff.

There's a lot of fan-made material out there (some of it good, some of
it awful, and some it it deranged drivel), but the official franchise
itself died when Beavis & Butthead made the "Enterprise" TV show and
then JJ Abrams nailed the coffin shut and dropped it six feet under
with his silly "reboot" movies. It won't ever be coming back. :-(

Nope. Whether or not people personally liked it, Voyager was fine and
fitted (mostly) with the other TV shows and movies.

It was when Beavis & Butthead decided to make a "non-Trek Trek show"
with their idiotic reboot attempt "Enterprise" that the franchise hit a
brick wall.

You are *a lot* kinder to Voyager than I am.
It had some good moments here and there (mostly in season 4), but for
the rest I hated it with a passion!

There are some silly episodes (the "singing" one for a start) as there
are in "Deep Space Nine" and the others TV shows and movies, but that's
just each individual's personal opinion.

The *fact* is that "Star Trek Voyager" (mostly) fitted within the
established Star Trek universe, whereas "Enterprise" crapped all over
the established facts and JJ Abrams silly movies simply ignored them
and started again.

I can't remember the singing, but there are plenty more episodes,
serious ones (or intended as such) that were completely horrible.
As for singing as a concept in an episode of any show..... I'm kinda
okay with it if the story's good. :-)

Star Trek Deep Space Nine had a superior good/bad ratio compared to
Voyager. Like 90/10 to 20/80. And even the 'bad' episodes of DS9 were
better than the average episodes of Voyager.

What about the basic premise?
In TOS you had Kirk's ship doing almost 1,000 lightyears in about 10
hours (see 'That Which Survives'). Voyager should have been home in
about 700 hours at those speeds.

No, there's no power or argument on Earth that would ever make me think
nice thoughts on Voyager as a whole.

As was the fad with other shows around that time, there was a musical
episode with Seven and HoloDoc "singing" (thankfully I don't recall any
of the other cast attempting it).

The HoloDreck-based episodes are also also absolute pointless drivel.
Simply a change for lazy writers to write something different and bored
actors to play a (slightly) different role.

> As for singing as a concept in an episode of any show..... I'm kinda okay

And the people can actually sing. Many people seem to think because
they're good a one thing in the entertainment industry, they can do
everything - act, sing, direct, produce, write, etc. Unfortunately most
of them can't.

Other examples are David Hasselhoff and William Shatner "signing", or
for a UK example there's Dennis Waterman.

DS9 also had the silly HoloDreck episodes ... even more ridiculous
since they were the most strategic point in an inter-quadrant war, and
yet all the command staff went to play in the HoloDreck. DS9 also had
the silly quasi-religious mumbo-jumbo episodes.

But those are still all just personal opinions. No doubt there are some
fans who loved the singing, HoloDreck, and religious mumbo-jumbo.

I said "*mostly*" fits. :-)

That's easy ... just watch "Enterprise" or JJ Abrams inane butchered
movie version - that'll soon convince you Voyager is still real "Star
Trek".

Yep, that was definitely one of the downsides. :-p

She's known as "Old Ugly" for good reason ... and her "singing" is
AWFUL, even worse than her "acting" ability. The only reason she was in
the show is because she was reportedly sleeping with one of the idiots
in charge (which just about proves his lack of intelligence and taste,
which in turn explains "Enterprise").

I must admit that the first three seasons of Enterprise made me long for
the loving arms of Janeway.
Thank goodness season 4 made me forget about the first three seasons.
Season 4 of Enterprise was sometimes even better than TNG!
