So recently I was in this mall almost by accident, I resist going to
these places. But, my wife was looking at clothes, purses, etc. so I
had a stroll around the rest of the mall while she was doing that.

All of a sudden I stumble on this treasure. I haven't seen such an
excellent collection of retro machines (that are in this good of
shape) in one place in a long time.

There was something REALLY cool about finding this place in a mall.
Like old times.

I didn't make this video, just linking it for a quick look around.
They found it long before I did :)

When I was there, on a Saturday (appropriately enough), there were a
number of 40+ year olds pumping quarters into the machines. Yes,
that's right, a quarter per play! Nice, crisp, kerchunk sound when
the quarter hits the credit counter. That was part of the appeal,
none of this token or custom currency bullshit.

I played my ass off for about an hour, and spent maybe seven bucks in
quarters.

The rest of the store is quite impressive. I'm not really into
comics, star wars action figures, dungeons and dragons type stuff but
they had a lot of that going on. Actually the arcade is only maybe
20% of their total square footage. They buy/sell/trade old retro
cartridges and discs. It inspired me to dust off the old consoles
which I plan to do soon.

If you are anywhere near Myrtle Beach and miss the old arcades, I
recommend checking it out. Last of a dying breed. So glad to see
someone interesting in keeping this stuff going.

Donkey Kong was perfect. I

They had Pac Man boosted to the later version "fast speed" setting
that was designed to prevent seasoned pattern runners from playing
forever on a single quarter -- it worked well on me, especially since
I forgot all patterns. I lasted only a couple of boards. heh..

I was surprised how much freaking fun simple Asteroids was in its
original form! Addictive, quick death,
what-the-fuck-happened-and-heres-another-quarter.

Super Punch Out! I forgot all their moves but enjoyed getting whipped
by the second fighter (skinny black guy). Used to love that game.
Wish I had time to learn each fighters characteristics again.

Galaga -- this one is a gem I still play on MAME fairly regularly.
Their fire button felt a little spongey, and I'm blaming that for the
fact I did not get high score. :) Seriously they should repair the
fire button switch, its an important retro game and I know that button
takes a beating but its an easy fix.

Tron. Holy shit this was fun. I honestly don't think I've played
since the 80's, and even if I did it would have been on MAME with a
controller that's not quite the same as that gearshift with a pistol
trigger thingamajigger on it, with the analog aiming knob to the left
of it. And everything worked! They don't make them like they used
to. And I apparently don't play like I used to. But it was damn fun
trying. I made it to (but not past) the COBOL level... :) Those
fucking lightbikes.

Centipede -- I've played this on MAME but its just not the same as on
the original machine with trackball. I only put one quarter in but it
brought back such fond memories of the roller rinks of 1980 :)

Wanted to spend some time on Gauntlet, MsPacMan, Mortal Kombat,
Dragon's Lair and some of the others but ran low on time and high on
obligations. I saw a thread somewhere that they used to have Gorf,
but I didn't see it while I was there.

Check it out if you're in the Myrtle Beach area and a fan of retro
gaming, good stuff.
