I've got a Performa 450 I just bought off eBay. It had a functioning photo with a 13" vintage Mac monitor.

I've bought the appropriate cables to physically plug it into my 15-20 year old Sony 15" monitor. I can't get it to work.

Any ideas?

The 450 (an LC III) has the standard two-row 15pin port. I'm assuming the
Sony 15" has the standard 3-row VGA 15-pin port. Assuming the Performa and
the Monitor are working, it comes down to your cable. Please describe the
cable you have. Does it have an adapter that goes from 3-row to 2-row
15pins? Does that adapter have dip switches or a rotary dial?

You see, it's not just about the pins matching. The cables themselves tell
the mac what kind of monitor is attached. If you have an adapter or
straight cable that doesn't have any settings then it is set to a single
mode. My guess would be that it is set to 1024x768. The Performa supports
512x384 (12" monitor), 640x480 (13" monitor) and 832x624 (15" monitor)
modes. It came with 512k of VRAM which gives you 16 colors except for the
832x768 mode; take the gram up to 768k and it would support 16 colors in
all modes.

Regardless, the Performa doesn't support 1024x768 so your cable needs to
geared to tell the LC that it's either a 13" or 15" monitor. The follow
eBay auction has one of the adapters with DIPs that allows you to
select/configure the cable settings.

If the PRAM battery is dead (or missing), replace it or use the “double flip” trick on the power switch.

DA-15 (Apple Video) to DE-15 (VGA) cables won't always work as they are set up for specific monitor types. You may need an adapter with switches that you can configure for the specific monitor / computer setup.

It may also be that your monitor doesn't support sync-on-green. Early Macs carried the video sync signal on the green video line. Mac monitors extract the sync. SOME VGA monitors do it, many don't. While there were adapters to extract the sync they were uncommon and quite rare now. If it is sync-on-green you'll need a different monitor. But finding a VGA monitor that supports sync-on-green is problematic, few advertise it or spec it in the manual. I have found some modern LCD monitors support it.

when I got my performa 430 I went though a round of LCD screens, least a
dozen of them, none would accept the mac signal (a 15 inch IBM model did
but displayed a irremovable nag message dead center) what did work, other
than my year 2000 nec / mitsubushi multisync lcd, was a el-cheapo HDTV with
VGA input, which is handy for my other vintage computers and games on 1
screen

PS: I rolled my own cable to work as a 13 inch 640x480 screen

Did you notice anything different. I know my adapter does not have switches.

Excellent question, I have several for sale in Connecticut, USA. Very Expensive to ship, pickup would be the way to to go. You may get lucky and find one in a local thrift store. -- glen

It's not about the size of the monitor, it's about resolution. Many macs can support different resolution, from 640 x 480 up. I do not have any more of this data handy unfortunately. You need to, iirc, short certain pins together for it to boot into a certain resolution. There should be a diagram or data somewhere. I routinely used to make these, in the mid 90s, to support single resolution fixed frequency monitors that I would find on the surplus market and sell them to Mac users. I still have a couple HP/Sony units tucked away.
Don't just start experimenting. You need to either buy a dongle or a cable (that has the pins already configured). I have a few Sony dongles in storage, but on one side they plug into a 15 pin Apple card/connector, a VGA cable on the other side. Probably not what the op is looking for.

all 68020 and up Macs had to have the cable's sense pins configured. I can't say when this became unnecessary.

If anyone in the NJ area or it's environs has a big (used to be called two page) black and white monitor in good shape I may be interested. The accompanying card would be moocho nice-o too. I have an old HP UX workstation monitor, 98788a, but I have tried hooking it to anything yet.

Can you tell me more about the Sony dongle?

You need to, iirc, short certain pins together for it to boot into a certain resolution. There should be a diagram or data somewhere. I routinely used to make these, in the mid 90s, to support single resolution fixed frequency monitors that I would find on the surplus market and sell them to Mac users. I still have a couple HP/Sony units tucked away.

FWIW I use Dell 15” LCDs on a variety of vintage macs. Mostly thru the switched connectors, but on IIsi’s the non switched 640x480 works best. If you need to make your own the Knowledge Base article "Macintosh Monitor Sense Codes: Technical Description” describes the sense pins, and how they need to be connected.

I tried a dell 15 inch and a 17 inch, the 15 inch had a V shaped base and
it would just blackscreen and present nag message about mode not supported,
the 17 inch (which I still have) has that oval base with the middle cut
out, it would just blink

no doubt there are a gazillion models of dell monitors, but those are the 2
I tried with no luck

Never tried a 17”, doubt if the vram i’ve got would support that pixel density. Currently connected: Dell 1505FP to a IIsi, Dell 1505FP to a Quadra 950, Dell E152FPb to a PowerMac 7200. Also have a Dell E152FPb connected to an Apple //gs, but that is through a strange video game-to-monitor board. Last is a Vision Sciences CTscan medical monitor connected to a Quadra 800. Some of the connectors will only work on certain machines, and it’s best to start at 640x480 and work up.

Again it has nothing to do w/the size of the monitor. Some monitors are multisyncs, and can accommodate a range of resolution (earliest NEC M* and M* 2 couldn't even support 800 x 600, only 800 x 560 according to the documentation. So officially it could only support the 640 x 480 mode). But using it in the 800 x 600 mode, if the card/mainboard supported it, probably wouldn't be a huge detriment to the monitor. The last tube multisync commonly available probably supported resolution from 640 x 480 all the way up to 1280 x 1024, at least. You could get all those on a single monitor.
From what I remember the PowerMac 6100 (first issue?) would only operate up to 800 x 600, therefore impossible to use w/a single frequency 64khz monitor (1024 x768 @ 75hz, yes, 1280 x 1024 @ 60 hz yes). All the others would do higher resolutions. The single frequency monitors can _only_ support more then one resolution if the vertical refresh allowed it. Do the math. 768 x 75 = 57,600 hz or 57.6khz. Close enough for a 64 khz monitor (all video has a certain amount of invisible lines, called overscan, so the actual output from such a card is closer to 60-62 khz anyway. 1024 x 60 = 61,440 or 61.44khz, probably closer to 63-64 so you're right there. The monitor itself also has to support multiple vertical refresh rates (60 - 75hz), which w/most 'modern' monitors (post 1986) is usually the case.
Confused? It's all pretty simple. But the size of the screen is immaterial. That's just Apple's internal scheme for simplifying it for less technical folk. At some point Apple must have supplied multisyncs.

I have and currently use an LC III with a more modern LCD monitor (a Dell
from around 2005 or so). I made my own adapter following this document
from Apple:
https://support.apple.com/kb/TA28939?locale=en_US&viewlo cale=en_US

Works well at 640x480 resolution.

I have a 15" Dell lcd monitor I use with my LC II, but I use an short
adapter with dip switches that goes between the monitors VGA cable and the
Mac. The screen is probably of a similar vintage to those mentioned below
(early - mid 2000s).

The adapter I have is one of these ->
http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-DB15-Male-HD15-Female/dp/B0016 OC1J2/ although
I don't remember it costing $13. Mine came with a foldout sheet describing
the various settings and I had to play around with them a bit to find the
right one.

Dell 1907FP

"Synchronization input signals Separate horizontal and vertical
synchronizations, polarity-free TTL level, SOG (Composite SYNC on green)"
* perhaps this is a standard feature for Dell monitors?

I have only ever had trouble with a single Macintosh regarding this, a IIsi, and I had tried several dongles shutting down and flipping DIP switches and restarting until the PSU finally blew on the IIsi. I still need to source three small capacitors. I had even bought a replacement video card and plugged that in with no effect.
As for my LCII, LC475 and some Performa 6XX's, I used an original unbranded DA15 to VGA adaptor from 1996 - no DIP switches - and an old 14" no-name VGA monitor I picked up in PCWorld on sale about 12 years ago. It's rated for 1024x768 (but also works on 800x600) and works nicely on 640x480 as I have upgraded the VRAM to the full amount on each Mac. I have a 12" Mac monitor (came with the LCII) but it's in pieces awaiting a full recap.
Obviously this 14" monitor is special, maybe because of the lower resolution, or its age.
I did use a Griffin dongle (dView maybe) on a friend's LCIII but I don't remember the DIP settings. She was connecting it to a massive 19" WS monitor and it took about 40 minutes going through all of the settings on three dongles before we found one that worked.
I may make my own adaptors for other Macs based on what Cameron mentioned.
Sorry, I'm of no help to you.
Keith

The adapter I have is one of these -> http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-DB15-Male-HD15-Female/dp/B0016 OC1J2/ although I don't remember it costing $13. Mine came with a foldout sheet describing the various settings and I had to play around with them a bit to find the right one.

"Synchronization input signals          Separate horizontal and vertical synchronizations, polarity-free TTL level, SOG (Composite SYNC on green)"
* perhaps this is a standard feature for Dell monitors?

I've bought the appropriate cables to physically plug it into my 15-20 year old Sony 15" monitor.  I can't get it to work.

Any ideas?

It's all good, I only bought this for nostalgia, and only have about $100 in the full setup of keyboard, mouse, performa 475, 2 video adapters, video cable, Ethernet card, and vga switch box.

I have two flat panel monitors plugged into my dell, and am trying with the smaller monitor that is vga, the other is dvi.

I know the 475 works because of an eBay pic from the seller, but don't want another monitor, especially a crt if I can avoid it... both due to weight, size, and cost of shipping and purchase.

I'll get it working some day, I just have bigger and better priorities now.

Thanks!
