Hi lurkers and posters,
After reading the Show History by Mizuki Shigeru I wanted to read
other
works by him and the other day finished "NonNonBa" which is the story of
his childhood and his education by his Grandmother who is called by all
NonNonBa.
She is well grounded in all superstitions and description of
yokai and other spirits. Shigeru is sensitive to spirits it seems and makes
good friends with one of them. Further his first love a girl destined
for the
water trade is equally sensitive to them and is able to get them to do
things for her.

I had read a lot of the material recounted here in the first volume of
Showa History, the trials of the family with a father who was not suited to
business in that time. Most of his ventures run aground and the family
situation is one of the mother's constant worrying about income because
she has 4 boys to feed. NonNonBa's attention to Shigeru and to others
is one of the reliefs to this anxiety. There the attention is to what is
happening in the spiritual realm.

Oh and you might notice that the family name is not Mizuki. Shigero
changed
his last name when he started a manga career. I think the family name
in the
manga is slightly longer than his true last name.

There is enough here for a season of anime at least but it would be
very
different from most anime we see in the USA. But he did use what he learned
from NonNonBa to write some of his best known works. One of the them
had its name changed to "Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro" when it became an anime.
The Wikepedia entry gives lots of details of his triumphs and of his
realistic pacifism.
