Some time ago, I noted that the old APX (Atari Program Exchange, long
defunct) game DANDY seemed to be the inspiration for Gauntlet, and also
noted that I thought it was available via ANTIC magazine. Turns out
I was more-or-less right on both counts.
Atari Games acknowledges a debt to DANDY in their development of
Gauntlet, but claims theirs was an independent idea that just happened
to end up looking similar.
DANDY is, indeed, still available through ANTIC magazine, for the
incredible bargain price of $12.95!! GET THIS GAME!

Right. Jack Palevich, the author of Dandy, got a ``free'' Gauntlet machine
from Atari Coinop. In return, he signed papers saying that he wouldn't
try to sue them. (He took the Gauntlet machine into work....)

I agree. It is one of the truly /great/ multiplayer games. You can
design (and store) your own dungeons, since there's a built-in dungeon
editor.
