G5 won't recognise Airport Express card [message #274027] Mon, 24 November 2014 20:10 Go to next message

I have now installed TWO different Airport Extreme cards (A1026) in an
early G5 tower (2.0GHz DP/PCI-X, or PowerMac 7,2).

Unfortunately, the Mac cannot "see" either of them. If I go into Network
Diagnostics, "AirPort" is greyed-out/not selectable as an option. On "About
this Mac", when you click to get info on Airport, nothing is found.

I've seated/re-seated the card(s) multiple times, pressed the CUDA switch,
repaired permissions, I have no idea what else to do.

I installed the system software (Snow Leopard) BEFORE I got the card, but I
cannot imagine that it would have had to be installed for the proper
software to be there.

Anyone got any ideas? Since I've tried two cards, I think I can rule out
the problem being the card.

Perhaps going to System Preferences > Network will enable the card if Airport wasn’t installed as a network device before? If there is an “Airport” device listed, and you still can’t connect, you might delete the Airport, then reboot and see if the Mac can automatically detect the card and give the option of re-installing the device.

Snow Leopard is not supported by Power Macs. It requires Intel processors.

Sorry, I meant to say I'm running Leopard, obviously. The question remains,
though.

So what’s it show in System Preferences > Network?
Is there an “Airport” device shown?
Is it “on”?
Have you tried deleting it, and rebooting, to see if the hardware is bad?

It does NOT appear in the "list" on the left-hand side of the System
Preferences window, nor can it be added to it.

When I click the "assist me" button, then click on "diagnostics", where it
says "choose network port configuration", AirPort is GREYED-OUT (i.e. not
selectable) in the list of choices. It only alllows me to choose Ethernet
or Other (I disconnected the Internal Modem, hoping that would help, but it
didn't make any difference one way or the other).

I don't know what you mean by "deleting" it, since it's not on the list.

I've tried TWO different cards, both of which the seller says have been
tested. I've seated them, re-seated them, rebooted, pressed the CUDA
button, repaired disk permissions, everything I can think of.

I’m interested in the answers. My Quicksilver with a Sonnet 933 GHz board doesn’t recognize the Airport Cards … I’ve tried more than one.
I’d decided maybe the problem must be in the motherboard. But, when I substituted two other 867mhz Quicksilvers … it did the same thing.
This sent by my mid 2012 Apple Pro Tower.

Even without the antenna, the Mac itself should still be able to "see" the
card plugged into the slot, even if it's got no range. The Mac literally
doesn't think anything is plugged into the slot.

I think I see the problem. This is a software issue.

The problem is likely that the 802.11 kext isn’t loading.

Startup by doing a Safe Boot holding the shift key which will force a rebuilding of the kext cache, hopefully getting the 802.11 kexts to load. If the kexts load, you should be able to open System Preferences > Network and it will automatically offer to add the new device port “Airport”. If this does NOT happen, then it’s likely the kext is still failing to load. You can open Applications > Utilities > Terminal and use the command “kextstat” to so the list of loaded kexts. Within this list you’ll be looking for “IO80211Family” and “AirPortBrcm43xx”. If they aren’t loaded, this is still the problem. At this point, it’s probably simplest to “refresh” your System software by reinstalling the 10.5.8 Combo Update, which will give you a fresh, up-to-date copy of the latest updated software. If the card isn’t recognized in System Preferences > Network, then you’ve got a more serious problem, perhaps a hardware issue?

My experience says it isn't so.
I used a G5 DP 2,7 GHz for a couple years: it had the Airport card, but no
antenna.

In my case, the G5 always detected the card, and it was even able to use it,
but it had a meager receptivity: only if the source signal was within a
meter, it could receive anything.

Hence, I think the OP problem is not about the missing antenna (although the
antenna would be probably needed to properly use the card).

Kris:
Thanks for the advice. After various family health issues (and deaths)
since Thanksgiving, I only got around to giving this a try today.

As you suspected, those KEXTs are NOT installed. Unfortunately, none of the
steps you suggested managed to install any of them. Even after running the
10.5.8 updater again, Airport still isn't able to be 'picked', and running
the Terminal again, I can confirm the KEXTs still weren't installed after
running the updater.

I don't guess you have any more ideas? Or do you think there's some
hardware problem preventing the system from 'seeing' the card (and
therefore preventing installation of those KEXTs with the updater)?

Andy

Just a thought.

Did you recheck the connection of the Airport Extreme card inside your G5?

The kexts for Airport (or competitive 802.11 networking) support all
reside as plug-ins in:

/System/Library/Extensions/IO80211Family.kext

In 10.9, these plug-ins are:

AirPortAtheros40 (handles the Atheros-based AirPort cards)

AirPortBrcm4331 (handles most Broadcom-based AirPort cards)

AirPortBrcm4360 (handles some Broadcom-based AirPort cards)

AppleAirPortBrcm43224 (handles the remainder Broadcom-based AirPort cards)

IO80211NetBooter

Within each of those are plists which identify the supported cards.

Often, all that is required is determining the PRECISE identity of a card
(using Apple's IORegistryExplorer tool), and then adding it to the related
kext, first by copying an existing plist, and second by changing that copy
to reflect the identity of the new card.

As but one example, the Apple-supplied Atheros WiFi cards are all 002a,
whereas the generic Atheros WiFi cards are all 002b.

Simply copying the plist for an 002a card, and changing it to 002b will
automagically add support for a generic 002b card as if it was an
Apple-supplied 002a card.

The very same concept applies to Broadcom cards.
