The only possibility I could think of was that I wore it at HeroesCon,
and sweated like crazy in the Charlotte humidity, and didn't clean it
after (I am unfortunately terribly lazy about cleaning cotumes). It's
not too big a deal to replace the damaged sections, as the non-metallic
body is still fine (and the gloves needed a little resizing anyway) -
but I'd like to figure out what I did to it so I can avoid it again
This is the palm of one of the gloves - some of the gold layer has
rubbed off, but it's gradual

This is the main part of a sleeve, against a non-damaged portion - the
gold has totally vanished like something stripped it off

Yes it's very likely your body sweat affected those areas.
however it the metallic aspects will bleed out eventually. That's the problem
with metallic lame lycra. The very element that makes you want to use it is
unstable. It happens sooner for some depending on their body chemistry
DO NOT machine wash your suit. It will accelerate the bleeding out of the
metallic fibers. hand wash it instead and that will pro-long things
