Hi posters and lurkers,

Recently Marvelous Melmo manga has been available online.
She takes miraculous heaven-sent pills to change her age.
Osamu Tezuka is the author/artist and it is typical of his work at
this time
1979.

Also Don Dracula is online, which is a simple parody of the Count here
given the title of Earl, the real live Dracula was a warrior prince and
Earl is
hardly adequate. In this manga he is an idiot accompanied by Chocula,
a cute daughter and minor appearances by Igor and some prime ministers
of islands other than Japan.
Osamu Tezuka is the author/artist and it is typical of his work at
this time,
1979-1980s

We have to recognize that Tezuka did lots of work to make a living and
he was very productive but the quality went down on these sort of gag manga.

On the other hand Hidamari no Ki keeps coming out online
maybe once a month with the best of Tezuka in this historical novel
of the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the friendship between a
physician who espouses Western medical ideas and a samurai in service
to the Shogunate but who wishes the best for Japan.
This was done in 1980 and humor is based on the character
flaws of the main characters, whore mongering and alcoholic
overindulgence as well as the samurai's need to defend his honor.
Gets very dramatic at times and part of the story is available as an
anime.

I have been watching Yawara for some time now and in the Episodes
numbered 80 which means I have only about 40 episodes to go.
I like this story very much but the more I watch it the less
attractive
I find the character of Yawara who presents as subservient to older
males except of course on the training floor. There she tosses her
partners more like Sayaka but not of course with as much exertion.
But when the bosses who want to hire her to promote their brands
show up she is altogether too mild with them. It takes the reporter's
intervention to get here to the competition floor where Ito needs her
support.

Since Yawara got me interested in martial arts i have checked out
series as they appear on online and I must say I was disappointed in
Judos which is about the extraordinary village from which comes people
capable of defeating anyone not from that town.
Since the village produces invincible judo-ka what sort of story
can you have? I don't much care for the art either as the hero is
realistically drawn but the opponents are big muscle boys that would
do well at Sumo if they want to relax.

Shuri no toka produced invincible fighters but at least they had the
history of Japan to exploit them in and all sorts of high powered fighters
from Musashi to the Shinsengummi to show how powerful the unarmed
fighters were.

Talking about muscle men, we have available at the SFPL Main copies of
the invented Golden Age hero, Flex Mentallo, Man Of Muscle Mystery. This
is a surrealist or dadaist set of stories. Flex is trying to contact
the Legion
of Legions with the help of Hoax former super-villain who is interested in
saving the world for a change and a few other inhabitants of the artist
and authors fevered brains. Oh and he beats the bad guys with his
Muscle Mystery which involves FM striking a body builders pose which
somehow subdues the villains. FM would fit right into the

series.

Have been watching True Blood, a corruption of the Sukie Stackhouse
novels of Charlene Harris. It is not an adaptation of the story but
reminds
me of the mess made of His and Her Circumstances when the manga-ka
could not keep up with the anime producer.
Anyone who wants to read the novels can find them in public libraries
filed in detective fiction. She writes a lot of other detective fiction
with
weird overtones.
That said TB is full of sex and violence with overtones of the WW
II NA/ZI
psuedo-scientific experiments on Jews and other prisoners in concentration
camps. Needless to say the hidden themes of racism and sexism are right
beneath the vampire/fairy/werewolves surface.
The novels have plenty of violence but the video depiction is worse
and
the violence is more extreme. The sex between va//mpire/human,
human/human,
fairy/half-fairy is pervasive so between the sex and violence //the
series is very
popular.
TB goes into 7 seasons while the Stackhouse novels ran to 15 volumes
of novels and several short stories including a whole volume of same.
I have not yet seen season 7 but if it redeems the rest of the series
I will be greatly surprised.
